Barbara Honey, a counselor at ‘Relate,’ the UK’s leading relationship support provider, says that one of the most common problems is that couples do not speak enough to each other about vital issues before getting married or immediately after that. These matters can range from how they’ll approach mutual finances to whether they want kids.

“We’d suggest having these conversations reasonably early on and then revisiting them later as people’s feelings often change,” Barbara emphasized the importance of freely and regularly communicating with your partner about everything.
“In my experience, a good way of knowing you are ready is if you feel that you want to spend the rest of your life with someone. Of course, you may want to spend the rest of your life with somebody but not get married,” she said.
Barbara explained that if you’re having “a lot of doubts,” it’s best not to rush into anything. “Think about whether you can be yourself about them, whether you have shared values and interests, enjoy each other’s company and how you work as a team, and resolve arguments. Think about it rationally with your head but also listen to your gut and whether it feels ‘right.”
