"She’s been pissed all day, saying that I’m 'wasting money' and that 'nobody will care about our cat.'"

Moving into an apartment complex is not rainbows and butterflies (as youtube vlogs would like to put it). It is tiring and stressful, and it comes with many responsibilities and expenses.
Having a pet would be the same–it requires not only love and care, but also patience and spending. Food, litter box, and toys–these are just a few of the things that you’ll need when it comes to owning a pet.
What comes when both happen at the same time, you ask? Well, that is more responsibilities and more expenditures.
In this particular story, a married couple decides to move into an apartment. They were to have a cat in the apartment that they are going to lease.
However, when the time comes for the other party to send the contract, the cat was not mentioned, even when they have written it in their application. While the wife was against it, OP decided to contact them about the cat, to which they charged an extra amount plus pet rent.
The dilemma is that the wife is upset because of what her partner had done. Final question: Is OP an asshole for calling in and informing the apartment about their cat or was he just being responsible?
Let's take a look at the post:
RedditThe opposite party sent the apartment contract, but OP called them back about the cat, in case it was overlooked and to make sure there are no conflicts regarding it. The wife was against it (although she couldn’t do anything about it), saying that it was a waste of money since the apartment wouldn’t care about the cat–she even suggested to tell them that they had given up their pet.
RedditIronically, their rent was cheaper than the original offer, so technically, they are on the long end of the stick. What is the problem here?
RedditMaybe the AH in this one is actually the landlord... well, at least this one thinks they are!
RedditCharging pet rent: dumb, yes, but illegal, no. Just another day of landlords taking advantage of their renters.
RedditOP and their wife was probably already prepared for the additional expenses that comes with the cat since they had written it on their initial application. And better safe than sorry!
RedditHow does one even hide a cat? In one way or another, the fire marshal or someone will eventually find them out.
RedditBrought exotic animals at a motel. Not exactly the same exact situation, but a (somewhat) similar experience.
RedditOP: not the asshole. Wife: something’s up with her.
RedditWait a minute. There’s an Emotional Support Animal registry?
RedditHere’s another suggestion. The question is: Is it credible?
RedditAnd this other Redditor says it’s a scam. A doctor’s note would suffice, but it comes with an ethical issue.
RedditThe situation with OP about the payment is quite similar with this fella. Not bad?
Reddit“Honesty is the best policy.” So much better than being fined and receiving an eviction notice.
RedditThe consequences of lying about the cat is not worth it. Avoid catastrophe!
RedditIt’s hard to be in dispute with your landlord. In this case, the safe choice is the best choice.
RedditFood for thought. Good for this Redditor.
RedditThis whole ordeal can possibly get you to court. Better to pay more for the kitty than getting stressed about future imaginable risks, right?
RedditThe landlord has the upper hand in this situation. The couple should just oblige with the deal then.
RedditThis is a great reason for disclosure of information about your pets!
RedditIt’s not such a bad thing after all, or at least in this Redditor’s experience.
RedditWhen it comes to leasing apartments, it is always better and safer to be honest–even when there are additional expenses–so as not to risk conflict with the landlord/s, and eviction from your temporary home.
