Reddit Users Swap Stressful Stories About Their Pets Accidentally Eating Food They Shouldn't
Lesson: make sure your pets don't have access to your chocolate or butter stash!

Researching about your pets will be a never-ending task of becoming a pet owner. I always do a quick search before I feed my dog any treats just to check it's not harmful to him.
OP could have certainly used Google before accidentally feeding their sister's dog a treat. When OP was 15 years old and their sister was 11, the sister got a dog.
OP didn't want a dog since it brought up some painful memories for her related to their estranged and abusive dad. However, their sister really wanted a dog.
The sister insisted that she will be responsible for the dog while OP kept saying that they won't take part in the dog's daily needs aside from petting it occasionally.
OP's sister wanted to get a bulldog but on the day of the adoption, they ended up adopting an adorable little dachshund. The staff at the rescue told them that Dasher, the name of the new dog, would be better suited for the sister's lifestyle.
Months go by and Dasher was fitting in nicely into their daily routine at home. True to their word, OP really didn't help their sister take care of Dasher aside from the sporadic petting but OP did admit that Dasher was a sweet dog.
On New Year's Eve, OP was eating some chocolatey treats while waiting for the ball to drop. Their mom told them to securely stash the Oreos so Dasher won't accidentally get into them.
OP did hide the Oreos but forgot the large chocolate bar left out in the open. Dasher promptly ate all of the chocolate.
OP's sister was freaking out because chocolate is indeed toxic for dogs. Fortunately, Dasher didn't eat enough to cause harm.
Dasher lived to an old age but OP has been extra careful with their food since then

A lot of redditors shared their own nerve-racking tale of accidentally feeding their dogs something toxic

If a dog smells something delicious, it will do its best to get to it

Another dachshund that got into a shopping bag only to gobble every last bit of cooking oil it can find

The oil wasn't filling so it also had to eat a sandwich to complete the meal. The following days are probably as gross as you can imagine.

Hey, the dogs have to have fun too while the humans are celebrating. It's only fair.

The theobromine in chocolates is toxic for cats and dogs but they do have to consume more than half of their body weight for it to be dangerous. Still, don't let your furry companions get into your chocolate stash.

The first aid the chihuahua got was traumatic enough for it not to repeat the experience

Pets are very, very prone to accidents because they do not know any better

This doggy certainly had a lot of "adventures"

This dog is really good at finding the Easter eggs AND the Easter Bunny

That KitKat bar is bigger than the shih tzu but he survived

Question, did you find your pomeranian inside the bag of M&Ms after she ate all of it?

Smart dog who didn't leave any evidence of the crime

Fat is terrible for dogs but they don't know that since this one is willing to go all ninja warrior to get to one

Ah, life before high-speed internet and smart phones

The responsible thing to do is to make sure your dogs do not have access to food that's bad for them. Although it is more realistic to just be prepared for all emergencies because pets can get crafty when they really want something.
Sometimes no matter how careful and responsible you are as an owner, your pets can just outsmart and trick you. Let's hope we're just like OP where one incident is enough to make us more careful with the food around our sneaky pets.
