Retired Nurse Founds A Special Hospice To Give Dogs Love And Care In Their Final Moments
Some people who cannot afford to care for their sick or aging dogs choose to abandon them. These pooches, who have lived lovely lives, find themselves alone and afraid in a shelter.
Imagine not understanding why you've been abandoned and having to face your dying days alone. It's heartbreaking to even consider.
Nicola Coyne, a retired nurse, realized she had to do something about it and founded The Grey Muzzle Canine Hospice Project. She takes in dying dogs that have been abandoned by their owners and ensures that they have a loving home for the rest of their life.
Nicola, from Nottingham in the United Kingdom, visits local shelters and adopts two sick elderly dogs at a time. She seeks to adopt dogs who have fewer than 6 months to live in most cases. She's owned dogs for around a year and a half, with the shortest being two weeks.
She also ensures that students "fulfill their bucket lists." That means puppy parties, beach outings, amazing steak meals, and McDonald's ice cream.
Nicola has given some of their most desperate creatures love and care as they have never received, according to the charities she helps. Nicola spends up to $600 on every dog, using her own money and donations from her charity company.
Some people who can’t afford to take proper care of their elderly dogs decide to take them to the shelter. And these dogs, used to a loving home, are left to spend their final days alone.

“It can be an utterly heartbreaking job, but someone has to do it,” Nicola says. “I’m a complete animal lover and I just can’t bear the thought of them spending their final days, weeks, or months without the love they deserve.
It can be really tough, but ultimately it’s so rewarding when you can make those times special.”

Joanne Snaith, from Helping Yorkshire Poundies, stated that, “Nicola does an amazing job, taking in dogs when they’ve been kicked out by their owners right at the very end of their lives — giving them the love and care most have never received previously in their lives. I absolutely admire the work of The Grey Muzzle Project.”
