Pets are often considered members of the family, and it's natural to want to do everything possible to ensure their health and happiness. But what happens when family members don't share the same priorities or level of responsibility when it comes to pet care?
The story begins about eight months ago when one of the family's cats was losing weight. OP went over to their parent's house to examine the cat and didn't find anything obvious other than weight loss and dehydration from not eating.
Now, OP's first word of advice has always been to bring sick pets to a vet. However, her parents and brother have always been resistant to spending any money on medical care for their pets.
About seven years ago, she spent $3,000 on a lifesaving surgery for this same cat because her dad said to "just let him die." The stipulation at the time of this surgery was that she would pay for it, but the cat would have to be an indoor cat for the rest of his life. The family agreed.
Fast forward to 8 months ago, and the woman tells them she can perform blood work at her job, but they would be better off going to a regular vet. To her surprise, they agreed and took the cat to a local vet.
The blood work showed that the cat had either contracted a serious illness from a stray cat or was possibly suffering from cancer and needed more tests to diagnose.
About two weeks later, her brother called her, crying and frantic, saying the cat could no longer lift his head and seemed like he was dying. Her brother and mom ended up bringing the cat to an emergency hospital and having him put to sleep.
Her brother hasn't spoken to OP since that day, and her sister says he feels like she blamed him for the cat's death. She has apologized for yelling at him several times through text, but he does not respond.

u/RosieEngineerOP warned her family of the risks involved with letting the cat outside, and they refused to listen. She also offered to perform blood work but suggested they go to a regular vet, which they did. However, her parents refused more testing and only opted for palliative care.
She warned her brother a long time ago and now he's dealing with the consequences of his actions.
