Statistics show that one in two Americans enjoy horror films, as do around 36% of people worldwide. But what exactly is it about the genre that we like so much?

After all, horror films are created to scare us and often contain disturbing scenes of violence and gore. These types of movies generally cover topics and situations that we would never hope to ever encounter in real life.

Yet, for some reason, we sit glued to our seats, watching in awe as the terror unfolds in front of us. So, how is it that we can be both terrified and thrilled at the same time?

Research shows that many people enjoy horror films because they relish the stimulation. The adrenaline rush we get while watching a scary movie can physically and mentally provoke us.

This sort of stimulation can affect us in either a positive or negative way. Positively in the form of joy and excitement, or negatively in the form of fear and anxiety.

Some people enjoy watching horror purely because they enjoy being shocked. It's human nature to be intrigued by things that are strange or unknown.

Personally, I have to say The Accused left me feeling sick. The infamous rape scene and Jodie Foster's blood-curdling screams gave me nightmares for weeks!

Sometimes, a film may even be a little too much for some individuals to bear, with many people admitting they have had to leave the cinema mid-movie on occasion. So crazy!
