At around 10:00 p.m. on Monday, March 24, the Barton County Sheriff's Office received a frantic call from a residence on Patton Road, just outside Great Bend, Kansas. The caller explained that while putting the children to bed, one had complained about a monster hiding under the bed.

“Upon arrival the deputies contacted the victim who stated she was babysitting children at the residence. When putting the children to bed, one child complained there was a ‘monster’ under their bed,” the police statement read.

Hoping to reassure the child, the babysitter went into the bedroom. Instead of finding an imaginary creature, she discovered an adult man hiding under the bed. This shocking revelation quickly turned into a physical struggle as the babysitter confronted the intruder.

During the altercation, one of the children was accidentally knocked over. Amid the chaos, the suspect managed to escape before the police could secure the scene.

Deputies searched the area that night but could not initially locate the suspect. Later, the intruder was identified as 27-year-old Martin Villalobos Junior, a man who had once lived at the property and was subject to a protection from abuse order.

The following morning, unaware that law enforcement was still on his trail, Villalobos returned near the property. His attempt to flee led to a brief foot chase, which ended with his capture.

Villalobos was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Barton County Jail. Authorities booked him on charges including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, child endangerment, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and violation of a protection from abuse order.

The fact that he had a legally binding protection order against him made his presence at the property even more alarming.

Following the incident, the Barton County Police shared the details on Facebook, prompting an outpouring of responses from the community. Many commenters expressed relief that the children were safe and sympathy for the babysitter, whose life had been irrevocably changed by the encounter. One comment stated, "I’m glad everyone’s safe but that poor babysitter will probably never babysit again and those children will never believe there’s not a monster under the bed. A literal living nightmare."

Martin Villalobos Jr. was ultimately apprehended after attempting to escape.
