Dealing with the loss of a parent always weighs heavily on the children; you lose an essential part of your life, and it's challenging, if not impossible, to replicate that relationship. It's a void that remains in your life until someone or something fills it up a little bit.
It's not uncommon for widowed parents to remarry after the loss of their spouses. In some cases, both individuals enter the new marriage with children of their own from their departed partner.
Kids often find it hard to adapt to this new life, and they reject the idea of being part of a new family. Parents try their hardest to help their children cope with the new family arrangement they found themselves in.
If one parent or both treat one or more children better than the other, it can impact the neglected child's life negatively. A Redditor who goes by the username u/SereneLogicSnail made a post on the r/AmItheAsshole subReddit where she explained how she refused to help her mother while her husband battles cancer and she's dealing with her own health problems.
