You know that moment when you text or chat with someone and you want them to reply as quickly as possible? But, there is that feeling telling you that the other person already knows what you’re trying to say, so they are not responding right away.
However, if placed on the other side of the spectrum and you are on the receiving end of the message, there is a high chance that you can guess the content of the message just because of read receipts.
Many experiences the anxiety of not being able to respond asap to a message, because they know that sometimes they need time to process the information and gather their thoughts.
And of course, as many people know, there is a well-known social media platform that provides information or solutions for almost everything–Tiktok. Unsurprisingly, the dilemma of enabling read receipts and people not responding to messages immediately can be solved.
Daniel Hentschel–a Tiktoker with quite a number of followers (429k) and likes (26.2M) who mostly posts modern-day solutions in the form of short, vertical videos–shares his tip for when people do not reply right away. Because of read receipts, there is a big possibility for people for them to evade the messages they receive.
He posts a Tiktok about “Outsmarting someone with read receipts.”
TikTok | @danhentschel“When someone has read receipts on, they will intentionally not open your message until they feel like responding,” Daniel says. People usually understand the whole message without opening the conversation–the first 80-85 characters can be seen on the lockscreen or the notification bar.
TikTok | @danhentschelIf your goal is for the other person to read your message as soon as possible, he advises the viewers to tell an urgent-sounding message on the first 80-85 characters. It is to bait them to open the message.
TikTok | @danhentschelThe screenshot below is from his tiktok video where he shows this example. “I’m in the hospital. In so much pain. I have no idea how but the doctor told me I bro—…”, this makes the recipient feel like they need to open the video instantly.
TikTok | @danhentschelAfter the 80-85-character clickbait message is the actual message. The whole message reads: “I’m in the hospital. In so much pain. I have no idea how but the doctor told me I broke my back from carrying this relationship. What is holding you back from communicating with me?”
TikTok | @danhentschelIf read out of context, the whole message sounds worrying. The real text, if you did not catch it, states: “What is holding you back from communicating with me?”
TikTok | @danhentschelThis is a kind of message that is labelled as a Trojan Horse texting model. The first impression on the message due to the read receipt shows an alarming statement, when actually, the real message is hidden on the second half of the chat.

People on Tiktok showed their sentiments towards the topic and on Daniel’s problem-solving video. Here are a few responses:
Just let them be. It doesn’t matter if people don’t text you back.
TikTok | @danhentschelYou have to understand that not everyone can socialize every single time. People need breaks to recharge their social batteries regularly.
TikTok | @danhentschelKind of like chess? Daniel’s tip is basically a strategy game of sorts.
TikTok | @danhentschelIt can nice to let people know that you’re ignoring them. This boldness can build confidence.
TikTok | @danhentschelYouTube has clickbait. Seems like it’s translating well to texts?
TikTok | @danhentschelIf you know people are intentionally not opening messages, does that not mean they are avoiding all contact with the message previews?
TikTok | @danhentschelAn actual emotional experience could have been received, but the receiver could have thought that the drama is just for show. Where to draw the line?
TikTok | @danhentschelThis person shares another tip–an easier and more convenient one actually–that works on apple phones. Why give a harder and more complicated way when you could just do this?
TikTok | @danhentschelPeople’s anxiety over texting is real. Is this really a solution that will positively affect them?
TikTok | @danhentschelThis individual is honest and blunt about their answer, but it makes sense. It’s a fair trade–no read receipts, no secretly reading the messages.
TikTok | @danhentschelTexting is honestly more stressful now than before since any small action like not replying on time, or reading a message, and not responding at all can make a person overthink. The use of technology as a means of communication has definitely affected the dynamics of person-to-person communication.
