Women being underestimated because of their gender is woven into history. If not for feminism, we'd still be unable to vote or get an education.
We would still be turned away from certain professions and industries. We have had a lot of progress, but the ideals of misogyny are deeply embedded in our society.
It's only recently that a 26-year-old Indian loco pilot, a train driver, had to confront the deeply held misogynistic beliefs of someone in her life. OP was offered the job after her father had an accident while working the same job.
It's a male-dominated field, but OP had to step up to support their family. She currently lives in a different city and rents an apartment she shares with another woman who is still in university.
OP's insane work schedule fits well with her roommate's equally crazy hours of studying. As a courtesy, OP pays a larger percentage of their rent since her roommate is still a student.
Their cordial relationship changed after her roommate's family visited. OP confronted her roommate about her sudden shift in attitude.
Her roommate said that her mom didn't like the way OP behaved and noticed that she was "practically a man." OP knew what her roommate's mom was talking about.
She took affront to OP's work uniform of shirt and trousers as well as her hobby of working on small electrical projects during her downtime
RedditHer roommate's mom said that OP's job, her uniform, and working on "man stuff" qualified her as a man
RedditShe warned her daughter to be wary of OP because she will be throwing rowdy parties in their apartment before you know it
RedditOP's job is important to her. She is her family's breadwinner. She supports her two younger siblings, her mom, and her grandparents. Her roommate's comments stung.
OP told her roommate that if she feels the same way as her mom, then she should move out to appease her misogynistic family. Her roommate cursed at her and said that asking her to move out suddenly because of her old-fashioned family was unfair.
RedditWas it unfair of OP to ask her roommate to move out because of what her mom said?
RedditHer roommate's attitude shift means she agrees with her mother's views, a commenter said
Shot-Tomato-5512OP is thriving and working very hard. Their misogynistic comments may sting but she shouldn't let them slow down her incredible journey.
u399566Make sure the loco pilot is a man or she might pass out
stackofclothesWhat her roommate's mom is not-so-subtly implying is that she thinks OP is a scary lesbian who will corrupt her daughter with her lesbian trousers, shirt, and incredibly practical hobbies
Basic_BurchAn Indian Redditor said that what OP went through wasn't surprising based on what they've experienced themselves while living there
No-Regular-167What is so offensive about having pants and shirt for a uniform?
Apex_Predator-4169What hurt OP deeply is that she considered her roommate her sister before all of the misogynistic comments poured out
RedditOP was right. If her roommate is so uncomfortable living with a woman like OP, then she should be motivated to move out of their shared flat immediately.
The-Answer-Is-57She is either a coward or a misogynist herself. No one wants to live with someone like that.
The-Answer-Is-57How long will her roommate survive renting an expensive flat on her own without OP's man-like money subsidizing her?
practical-junkieShe can only afford to stay in that apartment because of the salary OP earns from her job
Heraonolympia123Her roommate's mom clearly implied that OP is a lesbian and that made her roommate uncomfortable
TheBaddestPatsyOP can give her the benefit of the doubt and give her another chance to redeem herself
TA_totellornottotellOP listened to the advise asking her to show her roommate some grace. Maybe she was scared to stand up for OP against her own family because of issues concerning them?
u/[deleted]Her roommate confided how controlling her mother is during their conversation. They squashed their issue, but her roommate is still planning to move out to avoid inciting her mother's wrath again.
RedditOP is also planning to move to her company's employee housing and ask her mom & grandparents to move in with her. She reassured her roommate that she will support her if she ever decided to stand up to her controlling mother.
RedditOP also addressed some of the biased comments against their culture. She said the way she got her job was actually a blessing to her and her family because it kept them alive through her father's accident.
RedditThe Redditors are right; OP is an incredible woman who thrived when she could have crumbled when faced with adversity. She is a 26-year-old woman who lives on her own and supports five people financially.
Her roommate is failing to see that she has an incredible role model in OP. Maybe OP's support after everything that was said will help her roommate shake off her misogynistic upbringing.
