She explained that her visit to the Comedy Store was motivated by the advice of friends who suggested it as a place to connect with people who could offer job opportunities in comedy. During that first visit, they were seated in the front row, providing an intimate view of the comedian, Jay.

After briefly leaving her seat to use the restroom, Mavis unexpectedly encountered Jay. She described the encounter, mentioning that she didn't realize the restroom area was also where comedians congregated at the time.

Jay endured severe burns in a garage fire fueled by gasoline, necessitating numerous surgical procedures. Before being conveyed to the hospital for medical care, he expressed the need to make a brief stop at his residence to apprise and accompany Mavis.

In a December 2022 segment on the Today show, Jay conveyed, “My wife doesn’t drive anymore and I didn’t want her stuck and not knowing what was going on. It just seemed like the right thing to do, and I think it was.”

The United States government has verified that Jay submitted a petition for control over Mavis' estate. According to TMZ, Mavis is dealing with Alzheimer's disease, which served as the basis for Jay's legal action.
