In history classes at school, the horrible truth is that they tend to brush over the, well, horrible truths of history. This often includes accurate stories of Indigenous Lands and Culture.

The ways that settler countries came to be often leaves out key elements of the story--elements that are essential to the truth. While people are becoming more educated on the topic, the ramifications continue to exist.

Colonisation was a horrific event, and the repercussions of it continue to this day. Use this map to find out whose stolen land you are living on; and find ways to donate and help them.

The map shows which Indigenous tribes lived on which parts of land.

According to the website the project began when:

While mapping out pipeline projects and learning more about them for the sake of public awareness, I started to ask myself whose territories all these projects were happening on. Once I started finding the geographic data and mapping, well, it just kind of exploded from there.

The explanation continues:

I feel that Western maps of Indigenous nations are very often inherently colonial, in that they delegate power according to imposed borders that don’t really exist in many nations throughout history. They were rarely created in good faith, and are often used in wrong ways.

Australia alone has almost 250 distinct Indigenous language groups.

Awareness is on the rise regarding Indigenous land rights. For example, many people prefer (and should) celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, rather than Columbus Day.

So, who's land are you on??

Remember to pay your respects to the traditional custodians of the land. For me, it's the Kaurna People.

Look for ways you can get involved to support your local Indigenous community. In Australia, there is a great initiative called, "Pay The Rent." You sign up for a monthly donation to pay the rent for the Indigenous Land that you live on, and the money goes back into First Nations communities and causes.

There are always ways to help right the wrongs of history and fight for justice.
