Dogs are so great at guarding homes. But this one fella seemed to think he deserved a break while his owners were out enjoying Mother's Day.
Over at r/tifu, a woman shares how her dog failed adorably at watching over their house while she was out celebrating Mother's Day. The original poster (OP) recounted how her husband, with the help of their male Pomsky, scared off an opossum trying to get in through the dog door the night before.
They thought the issue was resolved, but they were in for a surprise. After a delightful Mother's Day filled with gifts, BBQ, and family time, she returned home, put her daughter to bed, and settled in.
The OP was looking for a vase for her flowers when she discovered not one but three baby opossums in her cabinet. They had entered through the dog door while her dog seemingly welcomed them.
The night turned into an unexpected adventure as she and her husband spent hours catching the baby opossums, each with its own unique personality and escape tactics. They managed to round them up and kept an eye out for the mother opossum.
The next morning, another baby opossum appeared in the dog’s food bowl, finally prompting their dog to act. After another sweep, they found a total of five baby opossums, all safely collected and handed over to a rehabber.
Although they consoled their daughter (and possibly her husband) about not keeping the adorable intruders, they were relieved to have their home back to normal, closing down their impromptu opossum daycare.
The OP entrusted her house to their dog, but...

RedditThe dog thought he was also due for a break, just like his owners.
RedditJust when the OP thought the day was finally over, she discovered her dog's adorable failure. The cuteness of the little joeys was irresistible, even to their Pomsky, who happily let them in.
Since it was Mother's Day, the mama opossum also wanted some time to herself, turning the OP and her husband into impromptu opossum daycare staff. Despite the chaos, the family couldn't help but laugh at the unexpected turn of events.
They ended the night with a memorable story, lots of pictures, and a newfound appreciation for their furry friend's softer side.
