It doesn't take a professional contractor to recognize when a floor is uneven, a door frame is slanted, or tiles are arranged crookedly. Most people can instinctively spot major design fails without having to look very hard, even when a landlord or homeowner has made an effort to hide the imperfection.
Of course, there are some amazing home renovations that absolutely nailed it, but it seems like there is an equal amount of home renovations that truly failed it. Sometimes it's a result of people trying to cut corners by coming up with life hacks and "solutions" that end up being more problematic than anything.
Other times, people get caught up trying to do a project by themselves when they definitely should have just spent the money to hire a professional. Certain homes have aesthetic features and rooms that would make any architect question their entire existence.
One particular Instagram account called ‘Typical Rykozhop’ is dedicated to documenting and shaming the most insane in-home designs and structural decisions out there. If you're considering starting on any home renovation projects in the next few years, consult the list below to see exactly what not to do.
These people made the mistakes so that you don't have to, don't let their disasters be in vain!
1. The never ending toilet paper dispenser
You just know this person was one of the toilet paper hoarders at the beginning of the pandemic. The toilet paper dispenser is the length of the whole bathroom and holds over 50 rolls of toilet paper.
typical.rykozhop2. Redneck wire repair
Somebody used plastic zip ties to try and fuse this cut wire back together. Unfortunately, their hack is not safe and not very effective.
typical.rykozhop3. This offset stove-top and oven
Usually, the stove-top sits above the oven door, but not in this weird kitchen.
typical.rykozhop4. They installed the toilet before they installed the wall
The toilet was installed before the tiling began, and long before they realized that the wall wasn't going to fit around the toilet.
typical.rykozhop5. Tenth times a charm
It took somebody a lot of tries to get this door hinge in the right place. So many tries.
typical.rykozhop6. One of these tiles is not like the rest
After looking at these tiles for a while the tile installer must have gotten a little dizzy. It's hard to say whether they did this out of spite or confusion, but either way it's annoying.
typical.rykozhop7. Did they really think nobody would notice?
This bathroom seems to have been built in an existing shower stall converted to hold toilets. We'd rather go in a bush than with a toilet neighbor in this tight space.
typical.rykozhop8. Volkswagen floor drain
Just because something can be repurposed doesn't mean that it should be
typical.rykozhop9. A plumber's worst nightmare
It's hard to say whether this is considered cutting corners or adding extra ones, either way it's a disaster waiting to happen.
typical.rykozhop10. This outlet is not up to code
We have a feeling this "electrical" outlet would not pass any kind of electrical inspection
typical.rykozhop11. Are these stairs or lost curbs?
Whoever was responsible for installing these stairs has possibly never used stairs in their life.
typical.rykozhop12. This trippy mosaic tile shower
This is not a shower you would want to get into if you had too much to drink, or if you have vertigo.
typical.rykozhop13. An exploding toilet
Imagine asking to use the bathroom at your friend's place and they send you down the hall to this. Flush at your own risk
typical.rykozhop14. The diagonal toilet does not line up with the tiles
Anyone with a compulsive need for things to be parallel, look away because this toilet vs. tile situation is an aesthetic disaster.
typical.rykozhop15. This is the opposite of easy access electrical outlets
This design flaw has probably been challenging tenants of the unit for years at this point. Thank goodness for extension cords.
typical.rykozhop16. Plug inception to get electricity
There is an issue with the electrical wiring in a home when you need to plug an outlet into another outlet to get power. Needless to say, there are not any electricians living here.
typical.rykozhop17. This is escalating into a dangerous pipe if it bursts
This pipe situation is in dire need of an update and like 15 welders.
typical.rykozhop18. Exposed wiring for interior lighting is not pretty
The only thing the realtor didn't mention was that the "updated electrical wiring" was not behind the walls.
typical.rykozhop19. That's the last time they use that contractor
Whoever installed this radiator decided that if you can't go over the floor, and you can't go under it, you have to go through it.
typical.rykozhop20. Three spray foam cans later and...
This required a lot of patience and a lot of spray foam, and it's not going to be easy to un-do.
typical.rykozhop21. The Leaning Tower of Radiator
The wallpaper in this room only adds to the chaos of the crooked radiator setup.
typical.rykozhop22. Is this a foot handle or a door handle?
It appears that you need to use your foot to latch and unlatch this door.
typical.rykozhop23. The toilet is in the cabinets
This bathroom is another classic case of "installed the toilet before measuring" and the result is this cut-out cabinet system.
typical.rykozhop24. These wires look like a giant spiders nest
Painting these wires white did not make them any less shocking.
typical.rykozhop25.
These confusing stairs look like a drunk person designed them, maybe they would actually be easy to walk up under the influence.
typical.rykozhop26. Any tile will do here, apparently
The person who installed this floor decided to throw the rules and geometry out the window to create this weird mismatched corner.
typical.rykozhop27. A dry wall and insulation art project
There is a proper way to install insulation and this is absolutely not it.
typical.rykozhop28. At home sewage system repair
DIY sewage pipe repair should not be attempted but that didn't stop this person from using some plastic pipe, a pool hose, and metal brackets to secure their operation.
typical.rykozhop29. The shower instructions are unclear in this home
It would take ten minutes to get hot water flowing through this hack shower system, and the water pressure is likely abysmal.
typical.rykozhop30. A bathroom kitchen combination is not sanitary
There is no reason for a shower to exist in the kitchen, yet there it stands.
typical.rykozhopIt's always better to ask for help then create a bigger problem
It's clear that not everyone out there can get things done like the HGTV teams. A lot of times, people's best efforts end up causing more problems than solutions when they try to do things themselves instead of getting help from a pro.
It's probably best to leave home renovations and construction projects to the experts or self-proclaimed handymen and women.
