Rebel Homeowner Defies Local HOA, Stands Firm Against Bowing To Their Rules Due To ‘Grandfather Clause’ On Home

Back when our narrator’s (Original Poster’s) neighborhood was just a vast empty wilderness, they had the privilege of being the first homeowner on the scene.

Things moved pretty fast, and before you knew it, houses sprouted like daisies, each now bound by the rules of a newly-formed Homeowners Association (HOA).

But OP was in a league of their own. They were shielded by the contractual armor of being the pioneering homeowner. The HOA rules didn’t apply to them, a fact other neighbors refused to accept.

They persistently tried to impose fines on OP for one infringement or the other. Whether it was Amazon Sunday deliveries, the state of their lawn or even parking vehicles in the yard—OP was constantly harassed for “breaking the rules.”

In the latest event, they stormed OP’s porch, bearing new grievances. OP was a woodwork enthusiast with a shelf outside housing varying pieces of lumbar. It wasn’t the fanciest decoration, but it wasn’t a gruesome sight either.

They demanded that OP get rid of the ‘eyesore’. OP reminded them once again they weren’t obligated to abide by the rules. However, if they eased up on the badgering, they might just consider moving the woodpile.

What happened next was a real shocker. OP’s rationale fell on deaf ears; they proceeded to list all their infringements from A to Z, then sternly handed over a ticket.

In a moment of unfiltered frustration, OP trashed the ticket and kicked them off the property. Things concluded with the neighbors hurling the "a****le" label and vowing to return.

Who was to blame in this communal clash? Find out the verdict below.

In the court of neighborly justice, Redditors resoundingly decree: NTA. Redditors advise a strategic legal move—sending a certified letter from an attorney.

They suggest that OP lay out the facts, emphasizing their non-membership in the HOA and the potential legal consequences of continued harassment.

This should give them bigger issues to deal with than whether the woodpile remains or not.
