In an era where online marketplaces like Gumtree offer an easy platform for pet adoption and rehoming, cautionary tales like this Reddit story remind us that not all animal guardians have the best interests of their pets at heart.
The story offers a disheartening glimpse into a world where animals are not only neglected but are also commodified to the point of exploitation.
The OP of this story revealed that they were browsing on Gumtree for a Rabbit hutch when they came across an interesting ad. Apparently, someone was offering a frail black cat with the title "need gone ASAP moving.”
OP couldn't ignore this ad despite not needing a cat. So, they composed a text to show their interest in adopting the cat.
The conversation went well, with the pair agreeing to meet later that evening. However, a few hours later, the cat owner sent OP a message where they requested that OP pay a fee before getting the cat.
Worst of all, the cat owner made it clear that they had already fixed a euthanasia appointment for the cat and would follow through if OP failed to agree to their terms.
Out of compassion for the poor kitty, OP agreed to come along with a fee for the adoption of the cat. On getting to the agreed address, OP noticed that the cat owner was lying about their proposed move.
But perhaps the most horrifying aspect was the discovery that the woman was a staunch cat breeder who kept her cats in terrible living conditions. Without hesitation, OP paid the fee, took her cat, and darted straight for her car.
The subsequent vet visit revealed heartbreaking news: The cat was suffering from severe malnutrition, fleas, worms, a severe heart murmur, and scars likely from cigarette burns. It had also been overbred, which in itself is a cruel form of animal abuse.
OP admitted to not knowing how much time the cat had left due to its health issues, but hopefully, she can enjoy her cute critter for years to come.
