Babysitting is a tough job because you will be responsible for the care and safety of other people's children. Yet, this is the first job some of us were hired to do as teenagers.
This dad of a 3-year-old toddler shared a recent experience with his 19-year-old babysitter. Their family hires the babysitter for 3 hours most of the time and they pay her $20 an hour.
They have worked with her multiple times and the sitter is familiar with their routine as well the rules for their kid. On this unfortunate day, the mom had to rush for an emergency at work while the dad, OP (original poster), is already at work.
The sitter had to take a 20-minute call and decided to do that outside, leaving the child alone. The sitter thought the private phone call was inappropriate for the toddler to listen to.
Within those 20 minutes, according to OP, his daughter managed to move the couch towards the living room gate, scale the baby gate, get into the basement where she found his expensive guitar, and take it off of the wall.
Now, his $2,200 guitar's neck is warped and in need of replacement. OP is pissed and has asked the babysitter to front the bill of buying him a new guitar.
He doesn't want to repair the warped neck since it diminishes the value of the collectible. The babysitter's parents refused to do this saying that it's OP's responsibility instead the babysitter offered not to receive pay for her babysitting hours.
OP wonders if he's the a**hole for demanding a $2,200 replacement guitar from the 19-year-old babysitter

RoughJuryWhat would you do? This dad wants the babysitter to cough up the dough.
SourceWaste no time and ask the real questions
dazedkatwomanIs this family by chance The Incredibles?
GoingkermitOf course, under the right circumstances, this is also possible
throw_away_800But a mom of a former hellion toddler says otherwise
dazedkatwomanIt's their responsibility to screen the person in charge of their child while they are not around
Quirky_Bumblebee_461The sitter was irresponsible for leaving the child alone for that long
Quirky_Bumblebee_461Even the warping of the guitar's neck is suspicious
AnimalimeNot only is the kid super strong, she is also a musical prodigy
AnimalimeIs OP trying to take advantage of the situation?
Carrie_TorontoThe baby needs to be on a TV show ASAP
Arejhey311Stop calling her to babysit for you but don't expect her to have $2,200 to pay for your new guitar
loreloreleiHopefully, OP read all these comments
Crumb-FreeShow of hands: who here thinks OP knew the guitar's neck was warped a long time and is now using the babysitter to get a new one?
daisynet911If I had $2,200 lying around, I surely wouldn't be babysitting
silverbrewer07We, too, would love to see a footage
QuixoticLogophileHey OP, is your expensive collectible guitar insured?
Doris_UselessThey should have done a better job child-proofing their home
geedunkgeekObviously, she made a very poor choice leaving the child alone but it's really not up to her to pay for that guitar
EmergencyBenches EmergencyBenchesAfter being called out thousands of times, OP still thinks the babysitter is responsible for the damages
Judgement_Bot_AITAThe babysitter may be wrong for leaving a 3-year-old alone for 20 minutes but it's not her fault the guitar was warped.
We're inclined to believe the expert's opinion that no child can warp a guitar that way unless she is a missing baby Avenger or something. OP neglected to care for his guitar and is now trying to put all the blame on the young sitter.
