Every dog today is a descendant of wolves, and wolves are carnivores. Today's dogs may be a bit more on the omnivorous side than their ancestors, but some friendships remain unlikely surprises.

Clearly, there are also times when animals are capable of showing kindness to another species. If we humans can be protective of our pets, then perhaps animals can display the same affections for other animals.

In some studies, scientists found out that it's more typical for animals to help other kinds of the same species, particularly the ones who are closely related or part of the group. This is considered self-preservation because they recognize themselves as part of the group instead of an individual.
