A bunch of 21-year-olds living together is guaranteed to result in chaos and unforgettable stories. This particular OP had the displeasure of living with a thief.
OP had a better credit score compared to her three roommates. Their cable and internet were put under OP's name.
Otherwise, they would have had to pay the cable company a $600 deposit out of pocket. The company offered OP a $300 Visa card after she signed up.
Two months later, the $300 Visa card was still nowhere to be found. OP called the cable company who informed her that the card had been sent a few weeks prior.
OP eventually found out that the card was used at a Whataburger, Target, and a liquor store near their home. The thief was in the house.
OP needed to figure out which one of her roommates had sticky fingers. Her amateur investigation made progress when Roommate #2 complained that his $200 gift card from Target was missing.
It was a birthday gift from his mom who still had the receipt. Roommate #2's mom informed them that the card was used at a Target near their house.
A few weeks later Roommate #2, Chelsea, found out that her wallet was missing. Her car keys were attached to her wallet.
Her car was still parked by their house, so the wallet must still be around somewhere. They flipped the house but couldn't find the wallet or the keys.
u/CharmingUniversity98Chelsea was having a meltdown over her missing things. OP and their other roommates were all surprised by her reaction. Chelsea implied that Roommate #4 must be the thief because they are the only one who haven't been victimized.
u/CharmingUniversity98OP found Chelsea's wallet in the trunk of her car a few days later. They went grocery shopping together and somehow Chelsea must have left and forgot her wallet in OP's car.
OP checked to see if it was really her roommate's wallet. As soon as she opened the wallet, she saw her Visa card with her name on it and Roommate #2's Target gift card.
u/CharmingUniversity98Chelsea called in a locksmith who informed her that they can't make her new keys unless she could prove she was the owner of the vehicle. She spent a lot of money to replace her license, title, and car keys. OP moved out of state with Chelsea's wallet still in her car.
u/CharmingUniversity98OP realized how petty her actions were 10 years ago
u/CharmingUniversity98She said that she went through a lot of therapy not to be the kind of person who finds joy in another's suffering
u/CharmingUniversity98Chelsea didn't know it but the roommates she stole from took revenge on her
18k_gold, CharmingUniversity98Why did she keep the stolen gift cards in her wallet anyway?
Original_Dream_7765Was she saving what was left on them for a rainy day?
Rosanna44, Cthulhu__, CharmingUniversity98OP didn't want to go scorched-earth against Chelsea because she didn't want that mistake to derail Chelsea's entire future
fappington-smythe, CharmingUniversity98She couldn't have made a great career out of thieving anyway, she was lousy at it
Spiritual_Victory541, CharmingUniversity98What OP did may be petty, but watching your thieving roommate fix issues for two weeks was more gratifying than the bureaucracy of filing a police report
irrational-numbers, CharmingUniversity98Plot twist!
Anomia29OP was still a considerate person. She didn't lift a finger to help her thieving roommate find her missing wallet, but she wasn't so vengeful as to ruin her life with a criminal record.
It must have been frustrating for OP and roommate #2 at that time, but it sure made for a great story years later. OP happily shared that Chelsea turned her life around and does good work for her community.
