Listen, everyone is afraid of something, whether or not they’ll admit it. Since the beginning of mankind, there has been fear, it’s ingrained in us as the most basic foundation for our survival instincts.
Fear is usually a response to danger, activating our flight-or-fight response. While a lot of fears seem to come from childhood and creep into our adult lives, scientists have even concluded that fear is partly genetic.
People can have a fear of literally anything like commonly shared fears of the dark or snakes and spiders. Of course, there are more uncommon fears, like xanthophobia (fear of the color yellow), hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (ironically, the fear of long words), or the topic of this article: megalophobia (fear of large objects.)
A subreddit named r/Megalophobia, self-described as “A place to post images of all things large, particularly ones that are "triggers" for those with megalophobia,” hosts quite a terrifying collection of massive objects. And a whopping 368k people have joined this community, not sure if for solidarity, exposure therapy, or just plain fascination.
Think of large things like enormous cruise ships, natural mountainscapes, skyscrapers, massive animals, statues, underwater structures, the list of gigantic triggers is surprisingly large itself. We snagged the top 80 upvoted posts of giant things for your enjoyment.
Keep scrolling to see if any of these images awaken a deep-seated fear of all things large.
