Every now and then, you'll get a parent who is a little too overbearing or has some strange requests. But, you try your best to accommodate them because you want what's best for the child.
As an active daycare teacher, you'll definitely get your fair share of weird requests. People share all sorts of stories about the things they've been asked to do by parents.
However, one mom's request takes the cake. This mother asked a daycare teacher to change her child's diaper... while they were at a party!
Yes, you read that correctly. A daycare teacher shared a bizarre story on Reddit that has left many people scratching their heads.
In the post, the Redditor explained that she was at a huge barbecue with friends from high school and a few friends of their parents. She was having a great time catching up with everyone when she bumped into one of her preschoolers and her mom.
After exchanging pleasantries, the woman then proceeded to ask her to change her child's diaper. It felt odd because this was off-hours and in a public gathering.
The Redditor refused and wondered why the woman couldn't cater to her child's needs. It was then that she realized that the woman is a germaphobe and has emetophobia.
However, this wasn't going to change OP's (original poster) stance. And so again, she politely declined.
This was where things took a different turn. Scroll down to find out how the story unraveled.
The daycare teacher decided to table the incident before the Reddit community
OP was stunned when one of her student's mom asked her to change diapers at a party
OP felt it was inappropriate for the mom to make such a request. And since her friends were around and familiar with her situation, one of them should have helped change the kid's diaper.
The post, which has since gone viral, garnered 14.6k upvotes and 1.8k comments. Here's how the Reddit community reacted to the story:
"NTA. That entitlement is beyond the pale"
This Redditor believes that the mom is using germaphobia and emetophobia as an excuse to abuse her child
Haha, this is hilarious. Perfect analogy.
"NTA. Not your kid, not your responsibility"
"Curious how none of the friends who were sitting right there jumped up to help."
"Her germophobia and ematophobia are not your (or anyone's) problem in any context."
"NTA, on paper this is a very simple answer, but I understand the guilt that you felt to have the kid sit in their dirty diaper on the way home"
"There is a right way and a wrong way to handle things and this was the wrong way on her end. NTA"
"Weird to ask you instead of her friends. Because she pays for preschool you’re on the clock during your off time as well? 😂"
"I'm sympathetic to the mom, to a (very limited) extent. I have a very keen sense of smell and an oversensitive gag reflex"
"She sees you as 'the help' and just told you, in public, that she will never see you as anything but 'the help'... "
"NTA. I hope you have helped her conquer her fear of parenting."
"NTA. If she can’t change her own child’s diapers she needs to have hired child care providers with her at all times or to not have a child"
From the comments, we can tell that the Reddit community is fully behind this daycare teacher. No one can seem to understand why the mom would make such a request and how she thought it would be okay.
It's sad that what started as a cordial encounter in a fun environment quickly escalated into a disagreement about appropriate boundaries. We can all learn something from this story – whether we are parents or caretakers, it’s important to remember that there is a time and place for everything.
And, if someone asks you to do something outside of your job description, it’s okay to politely decline. We can only hope that the child is doing well and is getting the much-needed care from her parents.
