12 Of The Most Hilarious Street Names That'll Have You Re-Examining The Map

After reading the title, you may be wondering, "What's so funny about street names?" Well, you're also right.

Most of the time, everything is really straightforward. A street name, which is only a part of your address, is generally named after an important figure in history or location.

Occasionally, it is also called after an event, such as the adoption of the Constitution or the beginning of the first republic. But occasionally, things go awry, and we get some extremely odd addresses.

That, however, only conveys part of the story. When naming its streets, the authorities in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for example, appear to have relaxed a bit.

Halifax is well-known for many reasons, including its stunning scenery and a wealth of outdoor activities, but it's also grown to be known for its pretty absurd signage. The city also has a That Street and a Little Jesus Lane in addition to The Other Street and This Street.

Also, we believe that whoever was in charge of Sedona's street names in Arizona at the time chose to lighten things up a bit. We don't know what will make you smile if this list doesn't!

1. Break-Me-Neck Hill, Tasmania, Australia

Since many of the regions inhabited by Aboriginal people throughout the 1800s by Westerners had their names changed, English street and place names in Australia tend to be very contemporary. However, some of them are a little out there, like this one in Tasmania.

The sign smartly cautions cars (as well as pedestrians) to watch out in advance.

3. Fabulous Texan Way, Arizona, USA

One of the best-named streets in the state is Fabulous Texan Way, which is situated in Sedona, Arizona. But this isn't the city's only amusing place name.

The streets Gun Fury Road, Coffee Cup Drive, and Pony Solider Road are all nearby Fabulous Texan Way.

4. Ha-Ha Road, London, UK

This street in London's Greenwich is likely to catch your attention. Sadly, the origin of the street name is not as humorous as you might imagine.

Although it's still uncertain whether the term originated from the sound someone made when falling or from bystanders hearing someone tumble over, a ha-ha is simply another name for a sunken ditch.

5. Man Fuk Road, Hong Kong

As this road sign in central Hong Kong demonstrates, street names can have hilarious qualities as a result of translation errors. This humorous avenue may be found in the city's Ho Man Tin neighborhood, oddly close to the Ladies Market.

6. Boring, Oregon, USA

Thoughtful people of Boring, as seen in the sign taken by Flickr user Andy Nystrom, are looking for another absurdly obscure location to team up with by combining with Dull in Scotland.

8. Bad Route Road, Montana, USA

Even if the street's name doesn't exactly inspire us with confidence, it might not be as bad as it first seems. In truth, Bad Route Road, a picturesque branch of the Yellowstone River that flows through the state, is likely the inspiration for the street's moniker.

Having said that, Bad Route Road was the location of a crime that is still unsolved that occurred in 1987 when a traveler's body was discovered at a rest area.

9. Butt Street, Pennsylvania, USA

This treasure can be located in Benton, Pennsylvania's Columbia County. Just think about using this as your address!

10. Grope Lane, Shropshire, UK

The small town of Shrewsbury in England is home to Grope Lane. The town is well-known for its historic Tudor district and red-brick medieval castle.

It also has a few amusing street names, like Grope Lane. According to some, the tunnel used to be a red light zone where ladies of the night would wait for callers who were gentlemen.

Shropshire is home to Bogey Lane, Butts Road, and Ice House Close in addition to being the county's only humorous street.

11. Mad Dog Lane, Yorkshire, UK

This road's name seems a little unappealing. Mad Dog Lane is a street in the UK's county of Yorkshire that is situated in the community of Hook.

We can't help but speculate as to what may have occurred on this street to give it such a peculiar name.

12. Smellies Lane, Dundee, UK

Another Scottish street that made the cut is Smellies Lane. The road is located in Dundee, a charming seaside city, and rest assured that there is no evidence that the area has an unpleasant smell.

It goes without saying that some misconceptions are caused by the "lost in translation" issue. In the native tongue, a street name that sounds amusing to a foreigner may actually be completely serious or even boring.
