Redditor's Dog-Sitting Friend Keeps The Dog For Too Long

Having friends who live nearby can be a blessing, especially when it comes to avoiding long commutes. But what happens when a friend starts taking advantage of your hospitality?

That's exactly what happened to one Reddit user who shared their story on the platform. The user's friend works in the same neighborhood and has been crashing at their house after work at 5 am instead of commuting back home.

The friend had done this four times in the past three weeks, and OP didn't mind it at first. However, things started to take a turn when OP had to leave town for work for one night.

OP asked their friend if she could stay over and walk their dog since she was working that night anyway. In exchange, OP offered to compensate her with a nice bottle of whiskey and take her out to eat. The friend agreed, but what happened next was completely unexpected.

On the night that she was supposed to walk the dog, the friend sent videos of the dog in the woods or someone's yard. It turned out that she had lost her job and decided to take the dog on a mini-vacation out of the city. OP thought that the dog looked happy, so they didn't think too much of it.

However, the next day, the friend told OP that she would text when she was coming back. When 5 pm rolled around, OP asked for an ETA, and the friend said she wouldn't be back until the next morning.

OP was frustrated that she didn't ask for permission to take the dog and keep him an extra night. When the friend returned, OP asked her about the oil change she mentioned, and the friend just kept blaming her job loss.

The friend finally brought the dog back at 11 pm, four hours later than she originally said she would. OP was understandably upset and confronted her friend about it, but the friend didn't seem to understand what the big deal was.

So, was OP in the wrong for making a big deal out of it? It's easy to see both sides of the argument.

On the one hand, the user did offer the friend a place to stay and to compensate her for walking the dog. However, the friend also took the dog without permission and kept him longer than agreed upon.

The friend was being irresponsible with a dog that wasn't hers, so any reaction from OP would have been justified.
