Architecture has long captivated us. We take notice of the structures around us because they influence our experiences and convey cultural narratives.
But to really get the feel of the city or the place, you have to get up close and personal. Most of us explore places we visit by taking strolls down the main streets and learning about history by visiting famous tourist attractions.
But that can be superficial and doesn't really suck you into the atmosphere of the place. Viewing things someone else decided to present to you, and only from a safe distance is sometimes not enough.
Today, we're putting the spotlight on those who seek out adventure and choose the less-taken path. We're referring to urban exploration, or urbex, which draws thrill-seekers and artists who want to record the steady process of building degradation.
As they move through wrecked and abandoned houses, they discover excitement and inspiration in the tales that these abandoned buildings have to tell. If you want to see stunning photos of deserted locations, the Facebook group "Abandoned Beauties" is the place to be.
We have assembled a gallery of magnificent images that perfectly capture the character of the strange and uncharted wilds that are rarely seen by average tourists.
