Living with roommates can be an enlightening experience. Through shared spaces and responsibilities, we often form deep bonds and lifelong memories.

However, occasionally, we encounter situations that test the very essence of cohabitation. Such was the case when our narrator (OP) announced their departure from a shared home of four.

Having lived there the longest, OP had furnished nearly 70% of the common areas. From the comfy couch in the lounge to the silverware that everyone used at dinner, their property was littered around the house.

As is common, roommates are always encouraged to contribute their belongings for the benefit of the household, but everyone opted to rely on OP’s amenities. So, when OP announced that they would be moving, it wasn't surprising to discover that their roommates became frustrated.

While two of the roommates resolved to split the cost of replacing what OP had decided to take, one of the occupants, Will, wasn't willing to let OP leave with any of their belongings.

He asked OP why they would even think of taking anything, knowing fully well that the rest of them would be left stranded. In fact, he boldly told OP that since he had contributed to caring for the items, then he, too, had a claim to every one of them.

Well, OP was quick to shut Will down. They had decided to move with their belongings, and nothing was going to change that.

Upon moving, the remaining roommates went through with their plan to replace the lost items. Will, on the other hand, stayed true to his penny-pinching nature and only chipped in for cups.

The Reddit community has slammed Will for being so entitled. There’s no reason whatsoever for him to lay claim to OP’s property just because he has been allowed to use it for a long time.

As one Redditor said, if someone moves into a shared apartment with property, it’s still theirs when they decide to leave. Maybe someone needs to explain this to Will like he’s a 5th grader.
