Cosmetologist Is Helping Women With Grey Hair Embrace It Instead Of Covering It Up

When it comes to hair turning grey, society places an awful stigma on women in particular. Considering the science behind going grey, it's kind of bizarre!

Trichologist Madeleine Preston says: "Most women who are in their 30s should see a few grey hairs, but by the time they get into their 50 most women would expect to have more than 50% of their scalp hairs turn grey."

Despite social pressure to cover the grey and dye one's hair a color more likely to be associated with youth, people are pushing back. A few years ago the Grombe Challenge took over Instagram and now Celebrity Hair Colorist Jack Martin is pushing forward to make room for women to embrace the grey, too.

Martin is dedicated to making space for women to embrace the grey.

For the last few years he has been perfecting a technique to help women whose hair is going grey, slowly embrace it and gradually ditch hair dye.

On social media, the cosmetologist extraordinaire shares before and after photos, inspiring countless fans across the globe!

Martin has also shared his technique on Instagram to help other people.

The first step in the process is using a color extractor to remove any remaining artificial color.

Then, he bleaches the rest of the hair while preserving the grey roots in order to prep the hair for a new color.

In the following step, Martin bases his choices on the hair's natural grey patterns.

To do this successfully, Martin asks that his clients come to him with at least 3 inches of roots growing out.

By having that sample, he is able to immitate the pattern throughout the whole head of hair.

In an interview with Allure, Martin said:

"Some clients have salt and pepper mostly in the front and the back is darker, so I match that and add some darkness to it."

It can take as many as ten hours from start to finish, but clients leave Martin's salon with a whole new head of hair.

Martin, who is based out of Los Angeles has worked with celebrities like Sharon Osbourne and Jane Fonda, to name a few.

Martin has also said that lockdowns around the world has led to more women embracing "going grey."

In fact, Martin told Insider:

"Now, many women have about four to five inches of a new regrowth so they've started to see how beautiful their gray is naturally."

He added:

"Being quarantined at home for three to four months, seeing how much gray hair they have and how beautiful their gray hair is, many women have changed their minds and decided that they want to go this way."

Martin, who trained in Paris, France, has over half a million followers on Instagram alone.

Martin's talents are in such high demand that when Jane Fonda's people first contacted him to do her hair for The Oscars, he told them he was very busy.

"Jane Fonda is an American actress and activist. In her six decade long career, she has been the recipient of numerous accolades including two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, and nominations for five Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Tony Awards."

Can you imagine telling a Hollywood elite you're too busy for them?

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Martin said:

“It’s hard for me to cancel [on] anybody because most of my clients they come from different states and countries, and they put down a deposit to book me and they book flights and hotels. So it’s hard for me to do that to them unless I’m dying.”

Unlike other artists before him, Martin shares his "secrets" on social media.

Martin isn't worried about people knowing how he transforms hair, because he seems to feel like the more the merrier.

More importantly, he knows that just because someone has his recipe, he's still who he is. He told Vanity Fair:

“Here is the formula. If you can achieve it, good for you, but you don’t have my hands. I don’t have your hands…. There is enough business for everybody and this is a new trend everybody loves to wear. Let them be good at it and let them make money and help other women.”

Martin says that maintenance for going fully grey is really simple. He told Page Six:

“Just purple shampoo — I like Matrix Total Results So Silver ($26) — and toner. I’ll give clients the toner formula to take home so they can do it themselves. They can do it twice or three times a year, and that’s it.”

Ever since taking on a couple of A-List celebrities, Martin's business has been booming.

He told Page Six:

"The day after the Oscars and the day after Mrs. Osbourne [showed off her hair] on ‘The Talk,’ my phone was ringing off the hook. I’m four times as busy now."

Recently, he's found himself booked solid for an entire six months at a time.

Don't worry, Martin has a few dream celebrities he'd drop everything for: Sharon Stone, Ellen DeGeneres or Meryl Streep
