Lost Dog Treks 150 Miles Across Alaska Sea Ice To Reunite With Family
When he was just a year old, Nanuq went on a journey that would make him famous among pets.

In the far reaches of Alaska, where the land is covered in ice and snow as far as you can see, there are lots of stories about animals and people surviving tough times. But now and then, a story comes along that touches people's hearts.
This is one of those stories, about a brave dog named Nanuq and his incredible adventure in the cold wilderness. Nanuq, a young Australian shepherd, got his name from the Siberian Yupik language, which it means "polar bear."
When he was just a year old, Nanuq went on a journey that would make him famous among pets. In March, while he was with his family visiting Savoogna on St. Lawrence Island, Nanuq and another dog named Starlight went missing.
Nanuq's owner, Mandy Iworrigan, had to leave without him, feeling sad. They went back home to Gambell, not expecting to see Nanuq again.
But Nanuq had his plans. He traveled over a hundred miles north, all the way to Wales, Alaska.
It was an amazing trip that nobody could believe at first. Mandy found out about it when a family member saw a picture on Facebook that looked just like Nanuq.
Mandy was shocked when her dad told her about it. She couldn't understand why Nanuq had gone so far away.
She thought maybe he followed some floating ice or hunted for food to survive, like seals or birds. Mandy was determined to bring Nanuq back home, so she quickly arranged for him to be flown from Wales to Gambell.
When Nanuq finally arrived back home, it was like a scene from a movie. Mandy and her daughter waited eagerly for the plane, and when Nanuq stepped out, they were overjoyed.
They hugged him tightly, feeling relieved and happy to have him back. But Nanuq's adventure wasn't without its challenges.
He came back with a big bite on his leg, and nobody knew what had caused it. It could have been a polar bear, a Wolverine, or some other wild animal.
The bite was serious, and Nanuq needed medical help right away. But Mandy's family couldn't afford it.
Luckily, a group called PAWS of Nome came to the rescue. They paid for Nanuq's treatment, which cost $750. Thanks to them, Nanuq got better and could enjoy being back home with his family, safe and sound.
In March, Nanuq, a one-year-old Australian shepherd, went missing along with another dog named Starlight while visiting Savoogna on St. Lawrence Island with his owners.

Iworrigan discovered Nanuq's whereabouts through a family member's Facebook post showing a dog resembling him.

Iworrigan quickly organized her dog's travel from Wales to Gambell on a direct flight.

Nanuq's adventure reveals just how tough and smart pets can be, proving they can handle even the toughest conditions. His story shines a light on the difficulties pet owners face in far-off places and the amazing help communities give that we don't always see.
Most importantly, it reminds us of the strong bond we share with our pets—a bond so strong it can overcome any obstacle and unite us, no matter how far apart we are, especially in the wide-open spaces of Alaska.
