We will meet a lot of people in our lives and some of them will be inconsiderate. They are the kind of people who will say they're just being themselves when in reality, they just have terrible personalities.
They have somehow convinced themselves that they can do no wrong even when their actions are obviously harmful to other people. You will get a friend or two with a personality like this but it's worse when they become your roommates.
Living with them is hell and this protective dog owner can attest to that. OP's roommates have an unruly dog they didn't train very well.
She is a large-breed puppy in need of a lot of stimulation and daily exercise her owners do not provide. They do take her to the dog park frequently where they allow her to do whatever she wants, even eat dirt.
This has caused her to get a lot of recurring health issues despite being less than a year old. One day, they brought her home from the park and OP saw the dog's eyes were pink and swollen.
OP's roommates swore that it wasn't pink eye despite administering antibiotic drops to ease the swelling. They didn't even quarantine her which was an issue for OP and their elderly dog.
OP's old dog doesn't like to play with the roommate's puppy. The puppy still finds ways to jump on OP's dog, slobber on her, and generally terrorize her.
OP got home one day and saw that the old dog's eyes were swollen shut
u/yourdogsucks7296OP took her to the vet where she was diagnosed with pink eye which is unfortunate since she already has a surgical procedure scheduled soon
u/yourdogsucks7296OP wonders if they should ask their roommates to foot the dog's vet bill because it's likely the puppy infected the elderly dog
u/yourdogsucks7296This is the prime time to teach the puppy obedience and boundaries but OP's roommates do not care enough to put in the effort
saltysaltedsal, yourdogsucks7296They knew beforehand that OP has an elderly dog who is likely not in the best condition but they continued to be reckless with their puppy anyway
saltysaltedsal, yourdogsucks7296Could it be that the roommates adopted the puppy hoping that OP will take her in and train her?
BeatingsGaloreOP refuted that quickly. However, the puppy is supposed to be a working dog but the roommates gave up on training her early on.
yourdogsucks7296Their poor dog deserves so much better than them. They are not giving her the best life possible and allows her to do as she pleases even when it hurts another animal.
okilzIt's easy to assign blame in hindsight but OP trusted their roommates when they said it wasn't pink eye
Early-Light-864Yes, OP should have known better than to take them at their word but it's not OP's fault that the roommates are liars and irresponsible dog owners.
yourdogsucks7296We shudder to think what they're like around the house given that they are this careless as pet owners
Tomatillo603To make it easier for everyone, OP can just deduct the $301 they're owed from the next month's rent. Deal?
wanderleywagon5678, okilzThey don't love the dog enough to train it and make sure she's living up to her full potential
Serenity_by_Willow, yourdogsucks7296OP wouldn't be an a**hole if they ask their roommates to pay for the vet bill as well as the damaged items the puppy got her hands on
holiestcannoly, mind_like_the_oceanFortunately and unfortunately, the situation condluded by itself as OP and their roommates both have to move soon because their landlord increased the rent
u/yourdogsucks7296It's frustrating as a pet owner when you've done all you can to protect and enrich your dog's life, but they are put in danger because of the action of others. Maybe moving won't be the worst thing in the world for OP and their elderly dog — this way, they won't have to deal with other people's problems.
