Kids enjoy making a mess, but what about cleaning? Usually not much, and too frequently, it is the parent's responsibility to clean up.
When a youngster is fully capable of cleaning up after them, doing it yourself presents a number of challenges. One is that it adds to your workload.
Two, it conveys the idea that they can't clean up their own mess and shouldn't bother because someone else will do it for them in a very literal sense. We have all, at some point or another, gone to a particular seat at a school dining facility only to see the mess someone else had left behind.
We neglect to take advantage of this opportunity to reflect on our course of action and clean up after ourselves. This doesn't have to be a huge project; rather, it just needs to be a conscious effort to make a table or an area as functional as possible for the people who will use it after.
In today's story, we see the OP's son, who doesn't like cleaning up after himself. He would often leave a mess in the kitchen.
OP told his girlfriend not to clean up after him as he is old enough to do that himself, but she still does it sometimes when she needs to use the dishes. The OP still had to confront him, but it ended in a brawl.
