A fixed charge or a predetermined portion of the money collected is given to collectors. You can also be turned over to a debt collection agency if you miss payments on your credit card, loan, or other ongoing debt.

Receiving frequent phone calls and letters from the organization seeking to collect the debt can be a distressing experience. The OP knew this which is why she threatened her sister to use the debt collector to take back her money.
