A hearing loss of some kind may occur in as many as 50% of those who have bacterial meningitis. This complication can happen as soon as four weeks or as late as eight months after a case of meningitis, depending on the individual.
Unfortunately, once hearing loss sets in, it rarely gets better. Meet u/hearmeoutthrowaway15, the 15-year-old OP who is deaf in both ears after getting meningitis as a toddler.
Luckily, her parents really pushed for intervention, so she could read lips, know sign language, and have cochlear implants. In other words, the OP is basically like any other girl her age.
The OP's aunt has been staying with her family during quarantine. She is REALLY not someone the OP likes, as she critiques every little thing the OP and her sister do.
The OP feels it’s also important to know that her aunt has done nothing to learn about communicating with the OP. She says that about 90% of the rest of her extended family knows sign language.
In order to avoid hearing their aunt rant, the OP just detaches her hearing aids, and her sister puts in her AirPods and turns up the volume. They can understand each other fine, but their aunt soon catches up to their trick and gets upset about it.
The OP kicks off her story but not without a headline
u/hearmeoutthrowaway15OP's aunt tries to instigate fights between the OP and her sister like asking her sister if she’s mad the OP has something she doesn’t
u/hearmeoutthrowaway15OP's dad basically told her she needs to lay off if she’s bothering them that bad or she can leave

u/hearmeoutthrowaway15It's so refreshing to read one of these stories where the whole family isn't against one particular person. Many Redditors would much rather read that only one person is an AH than have the person's parents as AHs too.
The OP was declared not the AH and you can share this story with your loved ones to get their opinions as well.
