Parents Lose It After Daughter Goes Against Family Rule And Refuses To Share Special Birthday Cookies With Them
Anything in this house is fair game.

Different families have beliefs and rules that are unique to them only. These beliefs often help to improve the bond between family members and sometimes provide a sense of identity.
Some of these beliefs, rules, and traditions are passed on from one generation to another. At the same time, new generations also create their own rules, which they may not pass down.
These rules sometimes seem sweet to most, while others may see them as weird. Families just choose what works for them, as it never is a one size fits all situation.
Unfortunately, not all family members may agree with a rule, often resulting in conflict.
We found a story on Reddit that tells a similar story.
OP shared on the AITA subreddit that her family had a rule that required everyone to share anything brought into the house.
However, OP shared that she would like to be able to keep some things for herself. As a result, she would keep the things she wanted for herself at her boyfriend’s parents’ house.
She further stated that on her birthday, her boyfriend bought her some specially decorated cookies. Her parents wanted to share them with her even when her boyfriend explained that he had purchased theirs separately.
OP stood her ground and refused to share, leading her parents to demand that she take the cookies out of the house, which she did. Although her boyfriend and his parents didn’t feel OP was wrong, her siblings thought she had some faults.

Let's dig into the details

OP's family has a rule that everything in the house belongs to everyone. It all worked out fine when she was a kid, but now, she needs some things to herself

OP refused sharing the special decorated cookies her boyfriend made for her on her birthday, leading to an argument that ended the celebration abruptly

Later that day, OP got a text from her siblings who were berating her behavior. However, her boyfriend and his parents are firmly on her side

Here's how the Reddit community reacted to the story:
"It seems like there are boundary issues, being that you are not allowed to set any."

"NTA - It's obnoxious that your dad basically said 'I can't wait to eat your birthday gift, hand it over'..."

"Sharing is good but there is nothing wrong with establishing boundaries and having some things to call your own."

"NTA...What’s next? Sharing husbands too?"

"This isn’t trivial. You’d shouldn’t have to share a special birthday gift."

"I'm having a hard time grasping the sheer level of entitlement that your family thinks they get to share your BIRTHDAY GIFT"

"I feel like your parents made this stupid rule to benefit from their children."

"Your parents are insisting on an unreasonable lack of boundaries."

"Feel free to never celebrate with them again."

"It's okay to have some boundaries with people regarding some things. That doesn't make you a selfish person."

"I'm just glad they didn't ask you to share your boyfriend."

"Sharing is caring, but not in this situation. You are not obligated to share everything."

The Reddit community gave OP the highly coveted title of NTA. According to them, the family rule was crossing boundaries, and OP was right to stand her ground.
Some stated that her parents made the rule to ensure that they always benefit from their children. In addition, they advised her to move out, as this was the only way to get her privacy.
What do you think about this family rule? Did you experience something similar in your family?
