Can you imagine growing old with someone and spending every day doing something you both love?
In this day and age, with swipeable dating apps, misogynistic and misguided “jokes” about straight couples not actually liking each other, and the number of people getting married dwindling, seeing a long-lasting couple, who genuinely enjoy each other's company seems to be an increasing rarity. This seems to help put into perspective why Steven and Millie Tani are total relationship goals.
The couple has been married for over 30 years now, and have spent the last 8 years working together on a shared hobby: Cosplay. The retired couple first learned about cosplay from their daughter who was involved with cosplaying for 10 years before her parents started.
Steven and Millie were always supportive of their daughter's passion, but they never considered it would be something they’d ever participate in. Until Halloween in 2014, when they attended Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland dressed up as Carl and Ellie Fredricksen, the sweet couple whose lives we follow through the first 10 minutes of Up that made everyone bawl.
Since then, the duo has worked together to create matching couple ensembles based on Disney couples. Hitting the classics like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Mary Poppins, and Bert the Chimney-Sweep, to newer Disney couples like Princess Leia and Han Solo from Star Wars, and Hank Pym & Janet Van Dyne from Ant-Man.
They travel all around California to attend conventions and Disney celebrations in their cosplay. Millie has taken on the responsibility for any sewing, and they piece together their attire with items found at thrift stores or accessories bought through Etsy and eBay, with some costumes taking up to two months to complete.
The couple credit cosplay as a way for them to combat the effects of old age. “We don't want to sit around in rocking chairs, as we want to enjoy our golden years and live life to the fullest,” they say. “It's almost a 24/7 labor of love coming up with new cosplays, so hopefully we can squeeze in another 10 years.”
Steven and Millie have taken to chronicling their outfits on their Facebook page, appropriately named Cosplay Parents. “We are both basically very shy and introverted individuals, so when people started to ask to take pictures of us in our cosplays, we were first taken aback at the attention we were getting,” they shared.
“We [also] weren't sure how people would react to us as an older Asian couple … but many have welcomed us and … we are feeling more comfortable and have gained more new friends.”
This dedicated Facebook page is full of pictures from their adventures, and comments from fans sharing their love and admiration for the two. Keep scrolling to see some of their incredible costumes!

I literally cannot get over how amazing these two are. Their love for each other and for their shared hobby is so sweet and pure.
Can you imagine growing old with someone you love, and discovering a hobby late in life that you enjoy together? Ugh, what an ideal way to love and live.
Which of the costumes we shared was your favorite? Their Aquaman-inspired costume cracks me up, but I really love the effort and details put into their Up cosplay.
