Science Says Sleeping In A Cold Room At Night Might Actually Have Good Health Impacts

We all know that flipping our pillow to the other side, the cold side, hits different. Or, at least it does when you have a really hot bedroom.

As those of us who have ever shared a room know, there is serious debate about what the optimal bed temperature is--with some people preferring it warm, but others liking it ice-cold. But some scientific research shows that having a cooler bedroom could have beneficial health impacts.

So what are you waiting for? Turn the air conditioning down a little, keep that ceiling fan rotating and make sure your bedroom is comfortably cool to give yourself a better nights sleep.

Doctor Christopher Winter the medical director at Charlottesville Neurology & Sleep Medicine says there are many reasons to keep your bedroom temperature on the lower side.

According to his research, the ideal temperature is between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, or 60 to 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

As our bodies have a natural temperature cycle, keeping the temperature of the room, and thereby our body temperature, lower, could help you fall asleep faster.

If the temperature is much above or way below that you are likely to get a worse sleep.

Temperatures lower than this stop the body from producing melatonin, which could keep you looking younger.

The better our sleep pattern, the better our hormone balance could be.

With better sleep being linked to a decrease in the stress hormone. The predictable temperature also leads to release a growth hormone, which, coupled with the decreased stress hormone could help you lose weight.
