Those who love their pets like family know the impact they make on your well-being. You get attached to them and treat them with utmost care.
So it is understandable that saying goodbye will always be tough. Whether it’s temporary because you need to move away or permanently when they have to be laid to rest.
It’ll hit deep and you’d want to be there holding their paws if the time comes. Because missing that moment might be something you’ll regret.
It might be what OP was thinking when she made the decision to tell her brother about the situation of their dog. Which their mom wasn’t too pleased about.
In a r/AITA post, OP told Redditors about their 15-year-old dog passing away. She and her brother were close to their pet but her brother couldn’t spend much time with her as he was attending college someplace else.
OP knew that their dog’s days were numbered when her health situation started going downhill. They thought they might have more days with her but it wasn’t the case.
OP’s mom requested that OP not tell her brother what was happening so as to not cause distress. But she made the decision to let him know after a few bad days so he could make plans to come home and say goodbye.
Her brother failed a test out of distress, which OP didn’t mean to happen. He also hadn’t been able to come home before they had to put down the dog.
OP is now thinking if she made the right decision to tell her brother about their dog. She thinks she should’ve followed her mom’s wishes.
This is OP's post

This Redditor shares this sentiment that it was an unfortunate event that wasn’t OP’s doing

From someone who didn’t have the opportunity to say goodbye to their childhood pet because they were kept in the dark, this Redditor assures OP that she made the right choice by telling her brother before it was too late
There might have been some way for OP’s brother to make up for his exam but he will never get the moment of saying goodbye if he missed it
The mom might partly be to blame for not handling it when she told OP she would
Although OP answered that things progressed quickly, which no one expected
OP made a decision considering how her brother would feel if he wouldn’t able to say goodbye. She hadn’t meant to have him fail and her intention was only for her brother to have a chance to not be kept in the dark.
Redditors agree that in this situation, OP is NTA. They shared experiences that assured OP that she chose the right thing.
