Over the years, there have been a lot of arguments regarding dating outside of one's age range. While different cultures have different opinions, couples with substantial age gaps generally suffer societal disapproval. 

Research shows that the average age gap is substantially broader in several non-Western nations than in Western countries. Some argue that as long as both parties in a relationship are of consenting ages, age is nothing but a number. 

Others believe it depends on the consenting age, as a recent adult, such as a person who's 18 and another who is 30, has no business dating. However, they would support a relationship involving a 28-year-old and a 40-year-old.
