Cats enjoy being independent, and for many of them, that means exploring their immediate surroundings. Some cats will roam around and leave behind a full bowl of food at home all because it's their natural instinct.
Although they still like human companionship, cats that roam around may not worry that they will be lost or hurt. For cats, roaming is just a natural behavior because they are naturally curious!
They enjoy staying current with their surroundings and are constantly searching for anything unique. In this manner, they are able to forecast their safety and territory and know where to run in the event that they are in danger from another animal.
OP's cat went roaming and found himself a new family who took him in. The elderly cat moved away to live with the neighbors eight doors down when he was five years old.
Years down the line, the new family was forced to move, and they couldn't take any pets. This means that if the OP didn't take elderly Mr. Cat back, he would have to go to a shelter.
The OP obviously said yes, and so he returned home only to pop a squat right in front of the OP. This was because the OP delayed giving him food, but he didn't expect how the whole thing would play out.

Cats have a tendency to think for themselves and will act accordingly, yet they can also get lost. Some people would have gone to have a talk with the people in the house and then try to get the cat to come back to them.
But then, you have to understand that you can't keep this type of cat inside all the time as they will leave if the see the chance to and return if they want to.
