Butter or any other greasy food, including margarine or butter alternatives produced with oils, shouldn’t be given to your pet. Instead, offer your pet a treat designed with their nutrition and bodily systems in mind when you're having a nibble.
That is the purpose of cat treats and dog treats! According to the Pet Poison Helpline (PPH), butter can cause problems such as moderate vomiting or diarrhea even though it is not hazardous to pets.
Also, the PPH also says that when pets consume butter specifically, it can cause gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the intestines, or pancreatitis, which is an inflammation of the pancreas. If, however, your cunning pet is already licking its lips, what happens then?
What if, while you were using the restroom, your cat finished the butter dish or your dog ate some movie popcorn? Although it is harmful to them, butter is not toxic.
So unless they eat a lot of butter, you don't need to run to the emergency vet facility. This is the exact same scenario that happened to a Redditor whose cat licked up a stick of butter.
