Man Turns To Reddit To Determine Who Keeps The Cat After A Devastating Breakup
This was not your typical, everyday breakup as no one was at fault.

There are countless breakups, so it's understandable that there are so many breakup songs. It's one of the most challenging experiences a person can go through, and in this case, it's made more challenging by the presence of a pet.
Well, a young man sought solace on Reddit after his relationship with his girlfriend, Shelby, ended poorly. But this wasn't your typical, everyday breakup.
They had been in a relationship for eight years, and that’s from high school until the present. But they had to call it quits since one of the fundamental beliefs they had both agreed upon had altered in the mind of the young woman.
As you'll see in a moment, she can't be blamed for her change of heart, and neither did her boyfriend blame her. However, how are they expected to select who gets to keep the cat when they divide the items up?
The guy is a little annoyed because of one hangup. He doesn't think Felix, their adorable cat, will be content living in his girlfriend's family house, where she will return.
Aside from that, we arguably ought to have said the ex-house, not the girlfriend's, but then we’d be digressing. There are already many animals running around the filthy house belonging to Shelby’s parents, and these folks believe their living room to be some sort of rescue society, so the cat would have to learn to adapt.
I made a list of what I thought was fair

They have more than a dozen cats and dogs

I'm not trying to hurt her but I'm so frustrated

Felix is a very frightened, lone cat who has never been in an atmosphere like that, so that won't work for him. The boyfriend tried to see the larger picture and made concessions to his ex, but now that they're not talking, he's trying to determine whether he was at fault.
After you have read all the comments, you can make that decision on your own.
Does the girlfriend think that it's totally okay to ignore pets?

You're doing your best to look out for the cat's wellbeing

According to this commenter, Felix is already in the best home

People's needs and wants evolve as they go through life. Even if you're in a relationship, you'll still be developing personally at the same time as your couple’s overall development.
It's unfortunate that this woman's priorities have altered, but neither the OP nor his partner can be held responsible for how they are managing the situation. Here are more comments below...
She really hasn't done anything wrong

The whole thing is all about what's best for the cat

A truly sad situation indeed

Breakups can be complex and emotional

The couple's work schedules forced him to take care of the cat, as the OP revealed. He's not upset with his ex since he had to take care of things, but he is striving to do so in their new stage of life.
His partner couldn't have been surprised by it, but it also couldn't have felt good. Let us know your thoughts about this post in the comments below.
