Thoughtful gifts are wonderful things to receive. It's touching when a friend or a loved one puts extra care into selecting a birthday, Christmas, or anniversary present for you.
The careful selection of the gift and their regard for your joy is a great indicator of how your relationship is going. A gift need not be expensive or rare for it to be treasured — as they say, it's the thought that counts.
This Redditor's boyfriend hit the nail on the head when he got her a birthday gift. OP has wanted a dog her whole life but was never in the position to own one.
That changed when her BF surprised her with a puppy on her birthday. The only problem is he picked the wrong breed and OP wants to return the dog.
OP put in a ton of work researching dog breeds that would best fit her lifestyle. She is planning on adopting a dog from a shelter and found alternative breeds that are similar to her ideal one in case the breed she wants is not available.
She has been looking forward to getting the puppy in a few months and her BF, Greg, is just as excited as her. They don't live together yet but they do spend a lot of time with each other, so Greg knows OP was waiting until next year to get the pup.
Greg chose to gift OP a Siberian Husky puppy from a breeder
u/[deleted]The dog was absolutely adorable but OP felt awkward because a Husky was not a part of her choices
u/[deleted]She knows a Husky's energy will not fit her own lifestyle, he spent a lot of money to buy it for her, and OP didn't get the chance to meet the puppy before it was given to her
u/[deleted]She let Greg know how much she appreciated the puppy but expressed her intention of returning it
She said he should come with her to a rescue to help her find the perfect dog for her but it was too late because he got really upset. He didn't make a scene during the birthday but OP knows he was angry.
He told her that she gave mixed signals about wanting a dog but then wants to return the one he gifted her. Greg said OP was being difficult and while she feels bad, she doesn't really want to keep the puppy.
u/[deleted]A puppy as a gift is more of a decades-long responsibility than it is a present
FunkyOrangePenguinEach dog breed has a certain set of requirements and OP is right to find one that would match her lifestyle; this is both for her and the dog's sake.
NightOwlsUniteA Siberian Husky is a poor choice of pup for a first time dog owner. Greg messed up and he knows it.
TheRestForTheWickedGreg's "thoughtful" gift was not well-researched. If he really listened to OP gushing about the kind of dogs she is considering, he would know a Husky is not for her.
wheredMyArmourGoHe should have gone with a more considerate approach if he really wanted to be the one to get OP her first dog
Dali_Laa_LaaOP would be doing the dog a disservice if she keeps it just to appease Greg's hurt feelings when she knows she can't provide what the dog needs
tinyrealist, sexnotgenderidYou have to match a Husky's high-energy requirements if you want it to live a good life. It's a working breed, that should be enough to clue you in with their lifestyle requirements.
PrettyTogether108He probably got tired of listening to OP rave about getting a dog and dismissed every point on her checklist because who doesn't want an adorable & expensive Husky, right?
UsuallyWrite2They owe it to the dog. It deserves an owner that commits to it for the rest of its life and that's not OP at all.
smackinsGreg took OP's opportunity to find the best dog that would match her
depressivedarlingIf Greg keeps on acting like a drama queen because he doesn't want to admit he messed up, then OP can rehome him as well
totallyrad16, unusedusername3Good intentions, terrible execution. Greg knows he messed up, his feelings were probably hurt because he expected OP to cry tears of joy when she finally got a dog.
However, it's not a total failure yet, Greg has to own up to his mistake and return the puppy. OP already gave him an out, Greg should stop sulking and do what's best for the puppy — return it and go with OP to a shelter to find the perfect dog for her.
