The transition to grandparenthood can be an emotional rollercoaster, as evidenced by a recent post on the AITA subreddit. Our narrator (OP), upon learning that his teen son (Jay) and girlfriend (Kate) were expecting a baby, embraced the forthcoming change, albeit with reservations about their readiness.

OP revealed that, unlike him, Kate's parents weren't supportive of their daughter's pregnancy and opted to kick her out without hesitation. Consequently, OP took the couple in and catered to them till they were able to get a home of their own.

As the months passed, the doctors advised on C-section, as the baby was breech. Preparations were underway for Kate's surgery, and OP even took time off work to be by their side in the hospital.

To his surprise, Kate made it clear that she didn't want visitors in the hospital, including him. Rather, she would prefer her older sister's presence for emotional support.

OP decided to respect her decision but further suggested that he would wait in their house till when they returned with his grandchild. Again, Kate declined to have his presence, stating that she would need some privacy to heal and breastfeed her child.

This second rejection hit OP hard. From his point of view, how could the pair that he sheltered and provided for during the pregnancy deny him the chance of seeing his grandchild? Worst of all, his son made no effort to step in on his behalf.

Not only was OP hurt, but he felt taken advantage of. Could Kate be objecting to these offers with genuine intentions, or is this just a show of her narcissistic tendencies?

The Reddit community made it clear: Good deeds don’t buy rights to access. They encouraged OP to respect Kate’s need for privacy, highlighting that support should come with no strings attached.

The message from the commenters was friendly yet firm—Kate’s comfort and readiness should lead the way in deciding when to welcome visitors. OP's role now is to be supportive from afar, ready to step in with love when the time is right.
