Family dynamics can become awkward when they change, and that was certainly true when one Reddit user split up with his wife. The now-deleted Redditor shared his story in the AITA (Am I The A**hole?) subreddit recently.
The OP explained that one of the many reasons he separated from his wife was because she continuously prioritized her SIL in every facet of her life. Since their separation, the OP has had limited contact with his ex unless it has to do with their children, and he says that has been working well for them.
Recently, the OP's ex contacted him to ask if he'd be willing to bring their daughter to her cousin's birthday party. The party was for the SIL's daughter, but the OP decided to put differences aside so that the kids could play together and enjoy the day.
Everything was going fine on the day. The OP was making a conscious effort to avoid his ex and SIL, so he spent most of the time mingling with other parents.
The OP had noticed that his BIL (the birthday girl's dad) was not at the party. While chatting with one of the moms, he overheard his SIL telling someone that her husband had been unable to get out of work for the party.
However, in the meantime, the other mom was making a joke about how BIL owed SIL flowers because he was actually out golfing with her husband. After that, whenever someone mentioned that it was a shame BIL had to work, the OP corrected them and told them where he really was.
After the party, the OP received an angry phone call from his ex saying he was an a**hole for blabbing about BIL's whereabouts. But the OP said BIL should be ashamed of himself for missing his daughter's birthday party to go golfing.
Now the OP is wondering if he is the a**hole here. Keep scrolling to see how people reacted.
