Woman Questions Whether Brother's Divorce Is Final After Six Years Of Separation, Causing Awkward Moment With New Girlfriend

In our everyday interactions with people, the things we say can sometimes get us into trouble or make situations uncomfortable. It's like when we casually chat with friends or family, and we don't think much about what we're saying.

But these seemingly small words can actually cause problems and lead to conflicts. OP is a 32-year-old woman who has a 38-year-old older brother who has been separated from his wife for six years, with minimal communication.

He often claimed that his wife was waiting for him to file for divorce. About five years ago, he started dating a girl who they broke up with five months ago. OP is her met this new girlfriend briefly during dinner.

During a recent dinner with her brother and his new girlfriend of one month, OP unintentionally brought up the topic of her brother's divorce.

This created an awkward silence, and her brother vehemently denied her statement, angrily calling her names and asking her to stop talking. Feeling uncomfortable, she left the dinner after paying her share.

Her brother later messaged her, berating her and involving their mother in the dispute. OP is now questioning if she was wrong for her unintentional remark and the extreme reaction from her brother.

She acknowledges that alcohol might have influenced her judgment but believes her brother's response was excessive. She seeks opinions on whether she is the one at fault in this situation.

It's not right to blame only OP for what happened. Sure, what OP said about her brother's divorce wasn't great timing, and it caught everyone off guard.

But the way her brother reacted, with all the angry words, was just too much. We all have times when we say things without really thinking about it, especially in casual conversations.

So, while OP's comment wasn't perfect, her brother's big reaction and her mom getting mad at her seem like too much.
