Anime Fan Finds No Support In Reddit After He Shamed His Girlfriend For Cosplaying A Character That Showed Her Mastectomy Scar
"'Flaunting her mastectomy scar' Jesus f**king Christ."

Opening yourself up to be ridiculed and judged is not a fun activity. The people who post on the Am I the A**shole subreddit are doing just that, and it's fascinating to witness.
There's a certain level of bravery involved when asking for a stranger's opinion, especially in stories where the OP is clearly at fault. That's exactly the case in this recent popular post.
OP has a 24-year-old girlfriend who cosplayed a character from My Hero Academia at a convention. Her efforts to copy Dabi's look were overlooked by OP's embarrassment of her.
OP shared that his girlfriend is a breast cancer survivor. She had a double mastectomy years before they met and didn't opt to have reconstructive surgery.
So, when OP asked her to attend the convention with him, he thought that she would "do something sexy" for him. She hinted that OP would love the character she chose to cosplay.
OP was disappointed when his GF showed up at his house dressed as Dabi on the day of the con. She was in a long white coat over white pants and no shirt.
She's a special effects makeup artist and expertly covered half of her chest with burn makeup. Her mastectomy scar was visible on the part without SFX makeup.
"It wasn't a very attractive costume," said OP. He noted that his GF made her scars more prominent using the makeup.

At the convention, a lot of people asked for pictures with his GF

OP noticed that some other looked at her chest

His GF asked him that night why he had been so quiet throughout the day and OP told her that he was embarrassed because she showed her mastectomy scars. She called OP insensitive and have been distant since.

Writing out this post and his girlfriend being upset weren't enough clues for OP to realize he acted like a jerk

He thinks his girlfriend's value is dictated by how much she caters to his fantasies

OP fits into a stereotype and it is not a great look

Based on how many people approached her for a photo, I'm guessing her take on Dabi is cool as hell

Given enough time, OP's girlfriend will soon become his ex

Her cosplay has nothing to do with satisfying OP's whims. That was his assumption. Not once did it cross his mind that her cosplay was for her own enjoyment and empowerment.

Her look didn't tickle his fancies therefore, it's embarrassing!

Our sympathies are with OP, he obviously went through such a difficult time at the convention!

His GF was a teenager when she beat cancer. She showed more maturity and strength at that age than OP is exhibiting now.

OP needs to reflect why he reacted this way because his girlfriend deserves so much better than to be treated this way

Here is a helpful bulleted list in case OP needs help pinpointing exactly where he went wrong

She used her expertise, time, and money to connect with OP's hobby and this is how he showed his appreciation

OP's disgusting reaction should be enough reason for his girlfriend to leave him

OP dug a deep hole for himself

His girlfriend did her best to portray the character accurately, but since it wasn't done in service of OP's whims, it was shameful

The fact that this is what the character represents just adds another layer of ick to what OP said

Do you think OP realized how much of a jerk he was after thousands of strangers called him out? He has not made any updates, but we are assuming that he went on his knees to beg for his GF's forgiveness.
He made her feel like she should be ashamed of her scars when she had no reason to. If his GF refused to accept OP's apology, who can blame her?
