Our OP (original poster) is a 17-year-old girl who attended a Halloween party with another female friend of the same age. For the sake of anonymity, OP called her friend Martiza.
Martiza picked up OP from her house and about five minutes before arriving at the rager, Matiza told OP that she won't be going home and will probably spend the night at the host's place.
OP was blindsided by the sudden change of plans because she didn't bring her own vehicle and their original agreement was OP was driving the two of them home. The night wasn't starting out great for OP.
It was Halloween night so OP knew she had to shell out $121 just to get home or call her mom to pick her up. OP chose to call her mom.
This was OP's best choice because her awesome parents told her that she can call them anytime, whenever she needed and they won't use it against her. Her mom would also be mad if she spend that much on a cab.
Martiza and OP arrived at the party around 8:30 PM and a few moments later, OP saw someone she didn't feel comfortable with. OP attends community college and saw this guy she had a French class with.
This guy is 24 years old and as much as OP tried to avoid him, he followed her around the party. Martiza was nowhere in sight and OP is left alone with the creepy person.
OP is doing her best to stay away from this guy who she calls 'Mark'. Despite OP's best efforts to say no to him, he's pursuing her. OP is also gay and has no interest in dating someone that old.
Mark knows that OP is gay but he told her he wants to "make her straight." Around 9:30 PM, OP had enough. She called her mom to come pick her up and told her everything, leaving out creepy Mark.
OP texted Martiza about her plans but she wasn't responding and OP decides to look for her. Forty minutes later, OP finds her doing shots and Martiza tells her to say bye before she goes.
Mark manages to find OP while she's outside waiting for her mom. OP's trying to walk away and Mark keeps following her but OP can see her mom's car.
When OP's mom recognized her, she gets out of the car and pulls Mark forcefully by the collar to get him away from OP. The big surprise is, Martiza's mom is also there and she doesn't know Matiza was going to a party.
Martiza's mom goes inside and begins yelling her daughter's name. OP didn't know Martiza lied. Now, Martiza is punished and she lost her car and phone privileges.
Martiza is now ignoring OP at school. She's also mad that OP wasn't punished the same way she was. OP doesn't know what to do and she thinks she could have handled the situation better. Is she the a**hole?
Below is OP's entire original post:
AITAphonecallPeople think that Martiza is being petty because she lied and got caught
rubberrazorsIf you want your friend to cover for you, the least you can do is let them in on the lie
Ice-StormOP has nothing to feel guilty about
empresslilandraAgreed, OP is very wise and made all the right decisions that night
crbryant1972It was time for Martiza to learn that her actions have consequences
WolfTotem9Martiza is being unreasonable for holding a grudge against OP
silversky6OP's mom sounds really awesome
sammablamblamAs for the creep, commenters think that OP should inform the school about his lurking ways
Pleasant-Koala147"Make her straight" is a euphemism for something sinister
divindeepjsVomit-inducing line, really
AnxiousFee2107Martiza may not know it yet but it was a good thing her mom showed up
ComtesseCrumpetMaybe OP should distance herself from Martiza
BayBrit5OOYikes, Martiza doesn't sound like a good friend.
leigh1419Also, way to go OP's mom for backing up your daughter's claims about Mark!
AITAphonecallThe things that we learned from this story are: if you're going to lie, lie better; Martiza sounds like a bad friend; OP's mom is amazing, and OP has great instincts and knows how to stand up for herself.
Hopefully, OP doesn't run into Mark ever again because that guy has issues! We also hope that Martiza has learned something from this lesson. Go on Reddit when you get your phone back, please.
