Ever had an altercation with someone and later wondered whether you were right or wrong? One Reddit community, AITA, invites people to share the full story behind their non-violent conflicts for people to judge who the asshole is.
Recently, one man took the community to ask whether he was wrong for refusing to lock his dog for some hours to allow his son's friend, Carl, who had dog allergies visit for a playdate. The man's dog is a huge friendly Bullmastiff that likes sniffing or licking new people who enter their home.
Because Carl has dog allergies, playdates with the man's son are limited to Carl's home. Carl's mom reached out one day to see if playdates could be organized in the man's home occasionally so she could get a break.
Carl would be fine if they vacuumed the living room and the man's son's room and locked the dog. While the man didn't have any problem with vacuuming the rooms, he objected to restricting the dog's movements and suggested they go to a park instead.
This upset Carl's mom because she thought he was just being a jerk to her son. Below are some of the opinions people gave on the matter.
Carl's mom is asking for too much.
u/FurryRoommateRightsCarl's mom has no right to force the man to restrict the dog's movement.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe man should choose what's more important between his son's friendship and the dog's freedom.
u/FurryRoommateRightsFamily comes first.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe dog doesn't need to meet everyone and would survive a few hours of restriction.
u/FurryRoommateRightsIf the man insists on going to a park, it should be for the whole day.
u/FurryRoommateRightsIt's the dog's home, not Carl's.
u/FurryRoommateRightsCarl's mom should find him a new friend and stop hosting the man's son.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe man is placing the dog's happiness above his son's happiness.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe man is lucky that the dog is sharing a home with him and his family.
u/FurryRoommateRightsLet the boys play, and find something to distract the dog.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe man should be more accommodating.
u/FurryRoommateRightsLocking up the dog for a few hours isn't a big deal.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe dog shouldn't be inconvenienced to accommodate another person's child.
u/FurryRoommateRightsIt's the dog's house, not else matters.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe man is unnecessarily being difficult and making a mountain out of a molehill.
u/FurryRoommateRightsThe man should train his dog to not sniff or lick guests in their home.
u/FurryRoommateRightsCarl's mom should find a solution and not demand that the man bends to her needs.
u/FurryRoommateRightsPutting the dog in a different room while the playdate goes on doesn't affect the dog's quality of life.
u/FurryRoommateRightsCarl's mom can get her break.
Carl's mom shouldn't concern herself with whether the playdate happens in the man's home or another child-friendly environment as long as she's getting the break she wants.
u/FurryRoommateRightsCarl's mom doesn't understand what being a dog parent is about because she doesn't have a dog.
u/FurryRoommateRightsIt wouldn't hurt to try it once and re-evaluate the situation based on how things go.
u/FurryRoommateRightsCarl's mum is making a power play.
u/FurryRoommateRightsParks won't work, the dog won't mind, and the man should consider prioritizing his son's wishes.
u/FurryRoommateRightsCarl's mom is not being unreasonable, the man should do his share or risk his son losing a good friend.
u/FurryRoommateRightsWhat Do You Think?
What are your thoughts on this case? We think this situation could have been handled better.
The dog deserves to have all the freedom in the world, but a little restriction for the few hours that Carl would be around wouldn't hurt.
He also failed to consider his son, who might love to host his friend in his room to show off his toys.
What do you think?
