Airline Throws Out Iconic Skirt And Heels Flight Attendant Uniform For More Practical And Comfortable Look

Even if you have never stepped foot inside of an airplane, you'd know what flight attendants look like. We've seen them all in movies, social media, books, and everywhere else.

No matter the airline, flight attendants will always be wearing the same thing, a two-piece suit with a tight blazer and a short pencil skirt. It's often coupled with a scarf around their necks, a pilot cap on their heads, and heels on their feet.

Simply put, while the uniform might look nice and well put together, it is not at all comfortable. It's actually painful and it constricts them from doing their job properly plus it's sexualizing them.

It's also not safe for them to be wearing such things in a metal tube with very little space to move around well hundreds of feet up in the sky. One turbulence could knock them off their feet which is not only trouble for them but also for the passengers they couldn't help in case of emergencies.

Seriously, it's one of the most impractical uniforms in the working world. Ukrainian airlines SkyUP has finally said enough, however.

They decided that they will be the first airline to toss that old uniform and update it with loose pants and comfortable sneakers.

Finally!

Being a flight attendant is not easy. They have to deal with emergencies and make sure that passengers are following all safety and flight protocols.

This means that they're on their feet for long hours on a not-so-stable surface. For women to do that in tight skirts and skinny heels is just unreasonable.

SkyUp is a young budget airline company but they're a huge company and they're not afraid to get rid of that classical flight attendant image and give their employees more comfort in the workplace.

In their July press release, they revealed what the uniforms symbolize to them. “The uniform embodies the idea of movement. The form is created for active, bold, bright; those who do not like superfluous officialdom, but appreciate style; reacts quickly, acts in a balanced manner, accepts challenges and finds a way out of any situation. These are clothes for those who are open to new things, those who love travel and life.”

Introducing the new uniform

Introducing the new uniform

The new uniforms had their first day back in October 2021. Passengers were greeted by flight attendants wearing the look created by Ukrainian fashion designers in the GUDU brand which consists of a bright orange and loose-fitting suit reflecting the color of the airline paired with Nike Air Max 720 white sneakers.

In addition to the uniform, the airline also did away with the tight buns which can cause scalp pains in exchange for a variety of other hairstyles.

Head of SkyUp Airlines Marketing Department Marianna Grigorash said, "Times have changed, women have changed, so in contrast to the conservative classics, heels, red lipstick and a bun, a new, more modern and comfortable image of a ‘champion’ has appeared. Freedom, natural beauty, individuality, no patterns and sneakers in which everyone ‘would like to fly.’”

It's no secret that flight companies have also benefited by having their flight attendants adhere to a certain appearance that appeals to a lot of their customers. However, that is not what SkyUp wants.

Marianna Grigorash said, “We realized that our female flight attendants didn’t want to be seen as ‘sexualized and playful.’”

This change is a drastic switch that is very impressive, especially in a country and part of the world where there is a lot of emphasis on a woman's appearance and how it should be.

People who have also seen the new uniforms are applauding the airline for taking care of their female employees. Not everyone agrees that the suits are stylish, however, but that's a matter of taste.

When it comes to the comfort and welfare of flight attendants, everyone loves it.

We are definitely loving these new uniforms and we think every airline around the world should really think about updating those pencil skirts and heels. Seriously, if we forced airline executives and managers to work in those outfits, we think they'd be begging for a change within half a day so they shouldn't expect women to endure those for longer.

It's the modern age already and things need to change. Thankfully, someone has already taken the first step.

Now, all we need is for the rest to follow.
