Disney once again proved that it still has that distinct magic capable of tugging at our heartstrings. The movie 'Encanto' (2021) not only managed to create iconic songs but also showed us a story centered around a Colombian family blessed by a miracle.
Disney has come a long way from showing us fantastical stories about princesses kidnapped by witches, then saved by a prince, and ultimately ruling their prosperous kingdom. The media giant is slowly but surely tackling other issues that go beyond romantic love.
Encanto does not at all revolve around the main character trying to find their happily ever after. It's a story about a Colombian family with magical gifts of their own except for one grandchild — Mirabel.
We follow along Mirabel's adventure of trying to fit into her highly talented family and eventually saving their embattled home the Casita. Before saving their home and reuniting their family, Mirabel was forced to face a much deeper issue.
The cracks in their Casita run deeper than the foundations of their home. It mirrors the gap in the relationship of the family members to each other as they are forced to hide their true feelings in order to appear perfect.
Bruno's story is not the only sad sequence of events in this beautiful movie; the heartbreak we feel is not just for Mirabel's alienation from the rest of her family. There are a lot more heart-wrenching details in this movie that captured the attention of Disney fans.
Bruno was a wall apart from the rest of his family who had no clue he was even there save for cousin Dolores who hears everything
@ahsokavadersMirabel seeing Bruno's makeshift place at the table was truly one of the saddest parts seeing as they are both isolated in different ways
@sad_oatSeñorita Perfecta Isabela as Mirabel called her was afraid of being anything less than perfect in fear of dissapointing her family especially their Abuela
@firelrd_zukoAntonio is a sweetheart but that couldn't have been easy for Mirabel to witness
fanonicalThis was the whole point of the movie; the endless cycle of generational trauma that is pervasive in families of POC
@sisterlelianasThe Casita is also a character and a member of the family
beetlethebugThe backstory on how the Madrigal clan got their gifts is a whole sad story that can be explored in an entirely different movie
@vairobartEveryone in the family was forced to represent the Madrigal name in the most pristine way because Abuela was afraid of losing the miracle — the only thing left from Pedro's sacrifice
@Mihrimah_FSIf you're the eldest child in your family, raise your hand! Seriously, this song captures that kind of pressure perfectly.
@bloggersltdMirabel deserves better!
@rightpawupIf you watched Encanto in the theaters, then you will definitely remember this short
@shrimplovercatHe spent more than a quarter of his life being hated for a power he did not ask for
@elliebatsMirabel was doing her best to make herself feel equal to the rest of her family and seeing her struggle with this was heartbreaking every single time
disneyplusThe lesson? The abuelas need to go to therapy to break the cycle of trauma
disneyplusThe songs are a bop but the story itself, although with a positive ending, is a lot to unpack
keyonThe early concept art for Encanto were more vivid in depicting Mirabel's state of mind, her emotions, and her standing in their family
c-rose2081Abuela had rigid rules for how members of her family should behave but her story is one of the saddest ones in the movie as well
neodotcomThere's no denying that Encanto is a visually stunning film. The musical scoring is one of the best Disney has made and tells the challenges and triumphs of each character.
We would be doing a disservice to the story if we don't talk about (Bruno, had to do a pun, sorry) the driving emotion of the film which is grief and the snowball of emotions that affect the people closest to us. Trauma can't be undone in a day but Encanto made it possible to talk about it easier.
