Many people swear that they are animal lovers, but it is truly heartbreaking to see the rising numbers of pets, especially dogs, getting abandoned each year. According to Petpedia, over six million dogs get sent to the shelter every year, and only about 700,000 strays get returned to their owners, as said by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
From those numbers, about 1.6 million dogs get adopted every year—but that still does not take away the fact that there are still many poor dogs out there who are struggling to fend for themselves because they're left alone on the streets. Most of them weren't also spayed or neutered due to their irresponsible owners, so they leave behind litters of baby pups who were unfortunately born into a situation where they won't be cared for enough in the early days of their lives.
It's a good thing that more and more people are turning to shelters while searching for a pet because a lot of these animals truly deserve to live a second chance at life. We really are truly grateful for people's kind hearts for giving them a permanent home to be in; one where they won't have to worry about when the next meal would come, and one where they will be given unconditional love.
There's a little corner on Reddit called r/BeforeNAfterAdoption, where dog owners all around the world come together to share their stories and photos of their dogs before and after they were adopted. Take a look at some of the best posts on the community below!
